J.L. “FRED” fred@setimes.com.au THE 2014 major round to script antanoola and another step towards its seventh Mid South East Football League flag will be taken at Port MacDonnell on Saturday afternoon when the colours of Mount Burr will be lowered. The Mozzies will exit the major round and won’t get to add to their record haul of A grade premierships while I expect the Tigers will take on – and probably lose to – Kalangadoo in the season decider at Port MacDonnell on September 13. Successful major round campaigns are all about momentum and Jason Dawe’s team has it in spades in both senior teams. The B grade Tigers are already in the grand fi nal and favourites to defend their title. After a mid-season slumber, Tantanoola is on target to record a fi fth consecutive win. The talk around the traps is that three of the planks in the Tiger campaign have chiefl y fallen into place. Firstly, they did not want the strong Port MacDonnell line-up in the fi nals (and nor did the three other final participants). The Demons are September specialists with appearances in three of the past four grand fi nals but 2014 was not to be their year. Secondly, the red-andwhites wanted to have a good fi rst semi and come through unscathed. That was only partly achieved as Sam Tincknell suffered a highly-rated across the region in the post-war era for his talent as a centre half-forward with Mount Burr, Millicent and SE representative teams. Although Hodgens takes an interest in his kinsman’s fortunes, he has declined to offer any advice to his great nephew via this newspaper about how the 2014 minor premiers might win on Saturday. Mozzies can’t Gamble BOTH sides will have some headaches at the selection table this week. When the sides last met at Tantanoola on July 19, Mount Burr had the services of its 2012 joint Mail Medallist Dylan Gamble. RELIABLE DEFENDER: Mount Burr’s Shaun Withers. hamstring injury which might have ended his season. Overall, the Tigers had few faults in defeating the reigning premiers Hatherleigh but the loss of Tincknell was a signifi cant casualty. Thirdly, Tantanoola wanted their coming opponents Mount Burr to have had a tough workout against Kalangadoo on the big Hatherleigh Oval in the second semi. That has been achieved as the match against Kalangadoo was a torrid affair which would have been draining on the ageing Mozzie team which has eight players over 30 years of age. Mind you, the 2nd semi-final loss might be a lucky omen for fi rst-year Mount Burr coach Frazer Scanlon. Family link BACK in 1959, his great uncle, Tony Hodgens was also making his coaching debut and was at the helm of the Mozzies. His side had to advance to the season decider 55 years ago via the preliminary fi nal and it then defeated Glencoe in the grand final to claim the club’s fi rst A grade premiership. Formerly with Norwood in the SANFL, Hodgens was He was available for selection as his SANFL zone club Glenelg was having a bye. Gamble was literally the difference between the two teams as he booted three goals and the winning margin was 17 points. He is not eligible to play again in the MSEFL in 2014 but his skill, pace and experience would have been welcome this week. The rumour mill is suggesting Mount Burr’s interleague defender, Brodie Hennink has an injured shoulder and may be on the sidelines. The Mozzies were fortunate to have had every top-tier player available for selection during their hat-trick of premierships from 2009-2011.
