NEWS 11 Permaculture program bears fruit Millicent teacher awarded for grassroots education partnership initiative DEDICATION to student learning has brought recognition to Millicent High School staff member Kathy Bell. She won the individual category at the annual Limestone Coast School Industry Partnership Awards recently presented in Mount Gambier. The judges applauded her commitment to the school’s Earth Care program, established seven years ago. The collection of interrelated programs and partnerships have all centred around the biodiversity nursery, which was inspired and created by Ms Bell in her role as environmental student support offi cer. Ms Bell said the Earth Care program had exceeded her expectations after starting out as an initial permaculture plot. She said success was achieved with signifi cant involvement of industry, community and government partnerships, along with expertise and funding through various companies and government agencies. “It started from very humble beginnings with a plan to help the environment and the kids, and while it’s been one step at a time, I’m really happy with the way things have turned out,” she said. “I’ve got students now that were in primary school when we started and are now in high school and they have seen it grow with the support of the rest of the community. “Everything you see in the program has been built or planted or raised by these kids and everyone has done an amazing job.” She was originally employed by Millicent High School in 2007 to support Aboriginal students who were transitioning to high school from Newbery Park Primary School. Ms Bell established a permaculture garden program for those considered to be at risk in the fi rst year of senior education. Hosted by the Partnership Broker Limestone Coast program, the school industry partnership awards recognise initiatives that have ultimately been designed to help young people stay engaged in education and training while also benefi ting the wider community. The business working with a primary school award went to the Bunnings Warehouse at Mount Gambier. Mount Burr Primary School teacher Lisa Scott nominated the business for its support of the Mount Burr Community Garden. RECOGNITION: Among the winners at the annual Limestone Coast School Industry Partnership Awards were Millicent High School’s Kathy Bell and Mount Gambier City Council chief executive Mark McShane.
