WESTERN BORDER FOOTBALL & NETBALL 2014 grand final preview GOAL DEFENCE: Looking for a big grand final result will be South Gambier’s Brianna Fuller. WE WORK FOR YOU! Good Luck to all the teams competing in the Grand Finals on Saturday Phone 8726 5300 61 Commercial Street East Mount Gambier SA 5290 SOUTH GAMBIER C GRADE (back row, from left): Rebecca Hunt (team manager), Tash Attiwill, Bri Fuller, Katie Torney, Lorelie Ellis, Danielle Lewis. Front: Ellie Patzel, Cindy Burford (playing coach), Jaymee O’Neill. Picture: DARREN ARCHIBALD, TURN8 PHOTOGRAPHY Battle of the goal shooters C grade: South v Casterton/Sandford SOUTH Gambier dominated the home and away series, but did have to come from behind in a number of its clashes with Casterton/Sandford. The Demons almost did it again in the second semi, but the Cats held sway and the belief that would have instilled is priceless. Saturday’s emphatic prelimi- nary final victory was critical for South. It reinstated its confidence and will have the players entering this weekend’s title decider full of belief again. It looms as a battle of the goal shooters with association best and fairest Lorelie Ellis and Hana Layley for the Cats. Both were the dominant scorers in the second semi and Ellis was bordering on unbelievable in the preliminary final. That being said, both goal attacks are more than capable. Jaymee O’Neil is a no fuss player, who has been happy to play second fiddle to Ellis while maintain her work rate to be a key link player for the Demons and when she needs to she is an accurate finisher. While Morgan Hamill has stepped into the large shoes of injured Prue Robbins with great effectiveness and her battle with key South defender Bri Fuller will be pivotal in the final result. Fuller and Tash Attiwill have formed a formidable partnership in the defensive circle for the Demons since the departure of Katie Torney on an overseas adventure. Torney was a key to the Demons’ success and finished top five in the association best and fairest, but Attiwill has taken over the goalkeeper role and her work rate, athleticism and passion for the contest will test Layley and inspire her team mates. Ellie Patzel is another key for the Demons. She works so hard on the defensive wing to limit her opponent’s opportunities while being a key offensively with her drive through the mid-court. Casterton/Sandford also has an outstanding mid-court player in Kathryn Gill-Killey, her ability to link with her shooters will be one of the keys to the Cats repeating their second semi final performance. Rachel Stephens was also influential as a feeder in the second semi, while you would expect Maya Gorman to earn court time because of her ability to create defensive stops. The Demons finished top for a reason and should cap off an impressive season with one more win.
