PROUD SUPPORTER OF THE MILLICENT FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUBS Congratulations to all netball teams who played in the Grand Finals. 2012 & 2013 COUNTRY PRESS SA NEWSPAPER OF THE YEAR (CIRCULATION UNDER 2500) CONGRATULATIONS to all participating teams and to the Millicent A Grade netballers on winning six in a row! A RESERVE PREMIERS: North Gambier. First flag for 12 years A reserve: North 46 d Millicent 41 NORTH Gambier entered the clash warm favourites, but Millicent had already notched two hard fought surprise wins in this finals series and from the whistle it was clear they thought they could do it again. As so often happens when DEN TON GEORGE STREET • MILLICENT PHONE 8733 2433 Adelaide based Netball SA umpires officiate, the first quarter was all about adjusting to the unfamiliar styles and it certainly took both sides, and their defenders in particular, a while to settle. North was patient in attack with Kerry Bilney and Alisha Bryan connecting well, setting up what was a perfect start from the Tigers shooter who converted 14 from 14. At the other end it was Phone 8733 4633 • Fax 8733 3095 12 Ridge Terrace, Millicent Congratulations to the Millicent A Grade netballers on their Grand Final win teenager Keah Lynch who was the architect of the Saints forward line with Hannah Cooymans providing good drive to find both Lynch and Zoe Brown in good space. At quarter time North held a one goal advantage with the second quarter mirroring the first and the match settled as a genuine arm wrestle. The defensive pressure saw a number of turnovers from both sides. The hard running of Bilney and patient delivery from Alycia Close set up the opportunities for the Tigers, while Lynch continued her high work rate and Lynette Shanks continually got herself to the right spots to ensure the Saints not only stayed in touch but got the 14 – Western Border Grand Final Review, Tuesday, September 23, 2014 defensive wing and it paid dividends. Shanks and Tunkin combined well and showed great patience in getting the ball into Brown and Lynch, while at the other end, the Saints blanketed the Tigers offence, not just creating turnovers but also restricting the shots. The Tigers put up only 10 shots for the quarter to the Saints’ 19 and in the end, North was fortunate to only be three goals down at the final change. North moved Wendy Gray out to goal defence to try and combat Lynch, bringing teenage defender Sienna Allen on under the post to tackle Brown. Lynch was certainly still a factor for the Saints but Allen created important turnovers and after a goal for goal start to the quarter, North stepped it up a gear at the halfway mark and once they hit the front there was no stopping them. The club had not played in an A reserve grand final for 10 years and hadn’t won a flag for 12 and this group was not about to let their chance to break the drought slip. Bryan was again dominant, shooting 11 from 12, while the scoring opportunities started to dry up for the Saints. In the end, North took the flag 46 to 41 with Bilney named best on court.
