14 NEWS Students step out of comfort zones Millicent teens develop confi dence through community program MUSTILLO RAQUEL firstname.lastname@example.org PROGRAM that changes the way teenagers think about themmet by acclaim by participants and coordinators. After eight weeks of activities designed to engage, equip and empower girls, the collaborative Finding My Place program has ended successfully. Program mentor Kym Galluccio said it developed the confi dence and self-esteem of participants. “The program has given the girls an opportunity to participate in activities they may never have had a chance to do,” she said. “Sometimes people do not have the environment that will nurture that. “Through interacting with their peers and professionals, the girls have learnt valuable life lessons while being surrounded by people who are good for themselves.” Ms Galluccio said the involve- ment of the students in both the planning and participation of events was essential to learning how to make positive choices. “The beauty of Finding My Place is that it provides the girls’ opportunities to create their own program,” she said. STRONG BONDS: Finding My Place participants Rachael Leibhardt, Amy Marshall, Monique Ryan, Lucy Chant and Kristie Camilleri (front) fi nish the last of their eight week program empowered and enlightened. “They chose what activities they wanted to do which is great in the development of skills such as decision-making and communication.” A joint initiative of the learn- ing centre and the Millicent Library and Resource Centre, the Finding My Place program endeavors to develop confi dence and self-esteem through various activities. “We have had great outcomes and the students are involved in some great activities that stimulate lifelong skills,” Wattle Range Libraries manager Janice Nitschke said. “The program is about building relationships with schools, libraries and other partners to enhance the personal development of students. “Finding My Place is integral to community development and social capital as the girls come out of it with a greater appreciation for the library and community as a whole.” Career preparation, adventure caving, yoga, 10-pin bowling and a glamour day were some of the activities the participants engaged in for the two month program. Millicent Community Learning Centre coordinator Sandy Hamilton said successful outcomes of the long-running program was reliant on the community. “Not only is it about young people, it is about the entire community,” she said. “As a result of the students’ personal growth, the girls look at ways to give back to the community. “The program and activities instill and aims to sustain a strong sense of citizenship among the young people.” Finding My Place participant Rachael Leibheart said she was grateful for the generosity displayed by organisations and businesses involved. “The people we have met through the program have been amazing,” she said.
