30 2014 SPORTS SE STAR AWARDS Sports awards announced Sunday SPORTS stars from across the region will be congratulated this Sunday, as individuals and clubs are recognised for their success, dedication and commitment to events and activities in the Limestone Coast. The high achievers, club volunteers, coaches and event organisers have been invited to the 2014 Sports SE Star Awards in Mount Gambier’s City Hall on Sunday. The event was established to celebrate participation in sport across the South East, while acknowledging those who volunteer their time during the year. Former South Australian National Football League star, Gavin Colville will attend as a guest speaker at the awards. Colville was a renowned player, representing the the Woodville West Torrens Eagles in 232 senior games and reached the mantle of captain. Recruited from the Geelong Falcons Under 18 team, Colville, who was affectionately nicknamed, “Scratcher” became one of the Eagles’ greatest ever players. His tally of games stood as a club record until 2011 when Justin Cicolella surpassed his tally. DUAL NOMINEE: Kye Todd has been nominated in two categories for the annual Sports SE Star Awards. Colville made his senior debut with Woodville West Torrens in 1996 and went on to win the Eagles’ best and fairest award four times, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004 and was captain for a total of five seasons, 2001-02 and 2004-06. In 2006 the Eagles won the SANFL premiership, but Colville cruelly missed the grand final because of injury. He was twice runner-up in the Magarey Medal and was a regular South Australian state representative during his illustrious career. After his SANFL days were over, Colville coached suburban Adelaide team, Henley Sharks for four years. Best of the best SPORTS SE Awards coordinator – and South East Local Government Association Star Club field officer – Josephine Duigan said the event was a chance for nominees to come together. “Categories for the sports awards include, primary and secondary school athlete, athlete with a disability, male and female athlete and the community awards section includes, coach, club, volunteer and event,” Ms Duigan said. “This year’s nominees include volunteers and athletes who have reached national and international level which is a fantastic achievement for athletes in country regions.” The event gives fellow athletes and volunteers a chance to meet successful sports persons from across the region. Along with the success of athletes on a regional stage, four nominees were also recognised at a state level in the Sports SA and Advertiser Channel 7 Sports Star Awards. Mr Stingers died unexpectedly earlier this year. He was a key official with the Legend of the Lakes hill climb motor sport event which is held annually in Mount Gambier in November.
