BASKETBALL 35 Magic teams impressive Mount Gambier tournament MILLICENT Magic Basketball Association has continued a run of impressive performances at the Mount Gambier tournament over the weekend. None more solid than the Under 12 girls who continued on their winning way, taking out their third title in a month. A strong first up performance against Mount Gambier where the girls jumped to a 20-0 lead enabled good use of all players who went on to a 30-8 win. The next two games also saw good starts resulting in a 41-12 win over Naracoorte and a 48-22 over Hamilton. The Sunday morning semi-final against Hamilton was another controlled 36-16 win, with players gaining valuable experience as the team advanced into a grand final play off against Naracoorte, following its tough semi-final comeback win against Mount Gambier. Again, Millicent’s starts proved valuable as it took an 11-0 lead into the second quarter against the physically stronger Naracoorte side. Despite tiredness setting in the girls went on to win the Division 1 title by 14 points. Playing Division 1 the Under 14 girls had a tough weekend with just two wins and two losses, while not standing out on the winners’ board this team of mostly bottom age players are learning from each experience and taking it to the bigger teams. Despite the Division 3 Under 16 girls being undermanned they managed to kick off the weekend with an impressive 30-18 win over Naracoorte. However, Bordertown proved tough opposition with size on its side, but the Magic girls showed great character despite the 39-16 loss. Saturday finished with a late game against Keith where the addition of Emma Gould, home from school camp, helped the girls to a confidence boosting 26-18. After beating Keith again on Sunday morning in the semifinal Millicent again took on Bordertown in the grand final and was pleased with the improved 20-15 score line, despite the loss. Meanwhile, the Division 1 Under 16 girls started the tourna- ment with a rivalry match against Mount Gambier. With players still on school camp those available impressed. Magic managed to stay in the game until the final quarter where the score blew out to result in a 11 point loss. Although the loss was disappointing, Millicent’s breaker for the weekend was its late game against Murray Bridge where it lost a winnable game by 11. A good sign from the girls was the breaking of their Sunday morning curse as they confidently defeated Strathalbyn by 23 with some accurate shooting from Keely Venn. All players contributed well against Great Southern to take a confidence boosting 21 point win away with them. Despite missing finals this team is growing in confidence. Another highlight for these girls this tournament was the inclusion of all three Venn sisters. A full and fit Under 18 girls team showed just what they have learnt over the years in the Magic Basketball Program. This team consists of several South Australian Country representatives with experience. Each girl brings a unique strength and variety of abilities. Saturday saw Millicent 40 defeat Portland 20, Millicent 30 lose to Mount Gambier 52 and Millicent 42 defeat Strathalbyn 20. Sunday morning the Magic continued with a comfortable 52 point win over Naracoorte and impressive 12 point win over Murray Bridge. The two victories set the skilled side up for a Division 1 grand final against Mount Gambier Lakers. Despite sticking with the Lakers for a good portion of the game the score blew out to a 29-56 loss. The Under 12 boys played in Division 1 and finished the weekend with two wins and two losses. They finished up in third position with consistent performances in all games. The boys had a close tussle early with Mount Gambier but their shooting let them down, they were outplayed by a determined Strathalbyn, unable to break its tight defence.
