Senator Wright and Greens MLC Mark Parnell were among the high-profile guests at the event, which aimed to empower residents throughout the Grant district. Speaking out against the potential of unconventional gas production and use of the hydraulic fracturing process in the South East, Senator Wright called for unity in the months ahead. “We know we are on the verge in this century of making decisions that will affect us for all time,” Ms Wright said. “Democracy, the strength of it, relies on citizens and communities saying we demand our politicians will make decisions for all our interests.” Mr Parnell urged residents to share their views with the state parliament’s natural resources committee. While submissions were due on January 31, Mr Parnell said it was not too late to be heard. “I’ve spoken to people on the committee, I know they won’t reject submissions that are beyond their date,” Mr Parnell said. “The committee will hear what you have to say on other matters relevant to the inquiry.” The inquiry’s first public session will be held in the South East next Tuesday at the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre. “Every word that is said by local residents and local businesses will be recorded in the permanent record of parliament,” Mr Parnell said. “I think this is an exciting time for you as a community Mr Parnell said the South East had the advantage of gaining support for the issue in the early stages. “We only have those couple of exploratory wells near Penola, we don’t have those hundreds of pads and wells like Queensland and New South Wales,” he said. “We are in early and I think the government needs to pay attention to what people are saying.” Following in the footsteps of the Robe District Council, five communities within the Grant District Council area were publicly declared gasfield free through the Lock The Gate initiative. Exploratory works by Adelaide gas giant Beach Energy near Penola have triggered outcry from several community sectors concerned over potential impacts on groundwater, agriculture and the landscape.
