SPORT 19 Credible performances by Magic Bright future ahead as teams show grit in tough statewide competition MILLICENT Magic has returned from the SA Country Basketball Championships held in Adelaide recently with mixed results. While the Under 18 men Division 2 side managed to claim the title, another four Magic sides competed. The Under 18 Division 1 women faced tough opposition throughout the tournament. This forced the side to play its best basketball for the season. The first game saw the team face an accurate Yorke Valley side who feature some highly acclaimed players. Millicent stuck with Yorke for half of the game, but could not overcome its expertise and went down 26-57. The next game was against Great Southern, where some interesting calls saw Millicent come off physically second best. Due to poor execution and a slow start Millicent went down and narrowly lost 36-39. The last game for the Saturday was against a tall Barossa Valley side, although it was here Millicent came to play, coming away with its first win 51-46. Sunday morning, the side came up against a smaller, faster and accurate Mildura team. All players were forced to hit the court with high intensity and strong defence. Millicent did not allow Mildura to get the upper hand and took away a narrow three point win 40-37. Coming off the high of beating Mildura the Magic was eager to take on rivals Mount Gambier. Millicent put in its best efforts with continuous tough and tight defence, which saw the side well and truly in the game. With just two minutes to go the difference on the score board was two points, however the Magic’s foul trouble saw the score stretch to a nine point loss, 38-47. The final game for the day had the Magic facing a multi-talented Murray Bridge outfit. Millicent’s defence was a highlight as it shut down Murray Bridge’s two forward players and limited its three point player. With some assistance from head coach Peter Seebohm, Millicent gained the needed energy to persist and come away with a nail biting 40-36 win. This game was the highlight for the weekend as Murray Bridge went on to claim the title. The Magic girls can claim they were the only team to take the points from the classy side over the course of the tournament. On the last day of competition, knowing that just first and second would play off in the grand final, fourth placed Millicent went out and played a strong game against a very tall Strathalbyn side. UNDER 18 WOMEN (back row, from left): Erin Watson (team manager), Olivia Fuller, Alana Winter, Jess Allan, Alex Walker, Annabel Brooks. Front: Victoria Lucas, Isabella Stratford, Alex Lucas. However, even with Alex Walker’s impressive three pointer buzzer beater, Millicent went down by one point. Overall, the Magic side played its best basketball over the duration of the tournament, with some strong defence throughout. The Under 18 women send out a thank you to Clinton Gallio for taking his time out to also coach the girls during the weekend along with his assistant Erin Watson. The basketball club congratulate Alex Lucas and Walker on their last junior town team tournament and wish them all the best for the future, particularly Walker who continues her basketball dreams, heading away for the Under 18 national competition in weeks to come. Along with the senior sides Millicent also had three Under 14 teams participating in the state wide competition. The next match – a quarter final – was a must-win game against a tall Willunga team. Millicent’s after being down by eight points early, clawed its way to the lead only to be pipped in the last seconds of the game to lose by one point. The team performed well against, in most cases, older and bigger players. The way the Magic side handled the pressure was impressive and proved maturity. With most players staying in Under 14s next year, the future looks bright for this side. Millicent’s number one Under 14 boys team played off in the Division 1 competition with their first game against Strathalbyn. The boys started strongly with some great teamwork to take a 61-25 win. Coach Jenny Herbert tried everything to inspire her team in their second game, but Mildura easily accounted for Millicent with a 29 point lesson. Again chances were missed in the next game on Sunday against Naracoorte. At this level there simply isn’t room for error and Naracoorte capitalised to take a seven point win. Regrouping as a team helped in the last minor round game as Millicent evened out its win, loss ratio to take a 51-44 point win over Great Southern. This placed Millicent in a qualifying final against Whyalla on Sunday evening. Both teams started well and despite being down Millicent made a good last quarter comeback but could not keep it up and lost 46-34, with some outstanding individual performances shown in the top division. The Under 14 boys number two side competed in the Division 3 competition, where it defeated Adelaide Plains 29-27, Port Augusta 35-10 and Mount Gambier 35-28. However, in the semi final Willunga took the upper hand and defeated Millicent 45-30. The Magic side includes a number of new team players and the improvement shows throughout the season was impressive. The future looks bright for Millicent Basketball Club and proved over the duration of the championships that against areas of much larger population they are not only competitive, but successful. 659450
