ADVERTISING FEATURE 3 THE vEHiclE: 1954 FJ Holden THE ownEr: Don Lockwood BY ALEX MCGREGOR A CHARMING 1954 FJ Holden once left to rot away in Mount Gambier, has been given an eight-year makeover by a passionate car enthusiast. The sparkling blue car has finally hit the tarmac after sitting in Don Lockwood’s garage for a number of years, undergoing a vigourous rebuild and restoration. With an estimated value of around $40,000 the sedan has become an invaluable part of Don’s life, especially after owning two FJ Holdens when he was younger. Don believed the FJ Holden was a cheaper model of sedan when it was first produced, which suited everyone’s budget at the time. “It was a car that was widely available and they were even used extensively for taxi services,” Don said. “It could take you almost anywhere, it was built tough, it was reliable and relatively inexpensive and affordable making it an ideal car for everyone.” Manufactured between 1948 and 1956, the FJ Holden was cheap on fuel, using just 35 gallons per 35 miles. Don first discovered the relic when a friend told him it was at a property in Yahl, standing idle in the elements and awaiting some tender love and care. “I had to strip the entire car and almost rebuild the whole thing due to the rust and lack of care it had received,” he said. “I did most of the work myself, with some help from friends. “Most of the parts I needed were sourced locally from Cocky’s Autopro, but I had to resort to a few online purchases during the restoration.” The body, back seat and dashboard are still all in its original state, apart from some minor enhancements by Don. The Holden has only been seen out and about since Australia Day and Don enjoys every minute of having his sparkling pride and joy on the road. “It is great to take it out on a sunny day and cruise down to Port MacDonnell or Beachport, and we are planning a rally to Donovans soon,” he said. Don is a member of the Holdens of Age Car Club, South East Classic Unique Car Club and the Melbourne chapter of the FX and FJ Car Club. “I owned two FJ Holdens when I was younger and I was always passionate about mechanics even though I migrated into a position as a fitter and turner later on in life,” he said. “Unfortunately I fell ill during my restoration work and had to take 12 months off to recuperate. “Now, the car is finally back on the road and I can’t wait to show it off at a national car gathering in the future.” • NEAR COMPLETION: Don Lockwood’s 1954 FJ Holden will soon have its interior completed in time for national car competitions and show and shine events. • SHEER PERFECTION: This sparkling blue 1954 FJ Holden is Don Lockwood’s pride and joy, which he loves to take out on the open road on a sunny day. love that car GO! $2000 EF TPOS CARD ON SELECTED MODELS1 WITH A BONUS Triton GLX+ Hi-Power Turbo D RUNOU $28,99 ACKS UP DRIVE ADVERTISI ADVERTISI VERTISING FEATURE 3 THE vEHiclE: 1954 RTISING FEATURE 3 THE vEHiclE: 1954 FJ Holden THE ownEr: Don Lockwood BY ALEX MCGREGOR A CHARMING 1954 FJ Holden once left to rot away in Mount Gambier, has been given an eight-year makeover by a passionate car enthusiast.
