Festivities begin on the Friday AdventureS with gambier coachlines • Top End & Kimberley Discovery 21 Days – Departs 9 June 2015 • UK & Ireland Discovery with Paris & Dubai 36 Days – Departs 19 July 2015 • Vietnam & Cambodia with 7 Night Mekong Cruise 19 Days – Departs 1 September 2015 • New Zealand Grand Tour includes both islands 22 Days – Departs 10 October 2015 • Tamworth Country Music Festival 10 Days – Departs 17 January 2016 • Canada & Alaska May 2016 - Register your interest night and conclude back in Millicent following the day’s racing on Sunday, May 3. Millicent Racing Club president, Mr Keith Sneath – in his third year at the helm – is thrilled each year how the residents dress up and embrace the weekend of racing, moreso as the club does not conduct the cup meeting at Millicent but at Penola, 50 kilometres away. After racing ceased at Millicent in the late 1960’s, Mount Gambier played host to the annual Millicent Cup meeting until the early 1980’s when the MRC opted to transfer to Penola. Only once since – in 2010 – did Millicent return to hold its cup meeting at Mount Gambier and that was because it was granted a Saturday date as a stand-alone meeting in South Australia with Adelaide conducting the metropolitan meeting the following day (Sunday). Thoroughbred Racing SA officials directed the MRC to stage the meeting at a track with provincial status and as Penola only has country status, Mount Gambier was the obvious choice. O’Leary also won four straight Millicent Cups from 2004-07. ultra important as to the attendance and we can only hope and pray for a perfect autumn day on Sunday week.” Mr Sneath is no stranger to winning a Millicent Cup, as Evenmoreaction – a galloper he part owns – took out the big race in 2012 and again in 2013. DOWN THE OUTSIDE: Evenmoreaction storms home to win the 2012 Millicent Cup. “Providing he (Evenmoreaction) has pulled up all right from his run in the Terang Cup last Sunday, there is every chance he will take his place in the Millicent Cup field,” Mr Sneath said. “His effort to finish fourth at Terang was his best performance for a while, so we are hopeful he is nearing his peak now that the country cups in this region are in full swing. “It would probably create history if Evenmoreaction could win a third Millicent Cup and his trainer (Michael O’Leary) loves nothing better than winning local cups. Mind you, nor do the owners,” he added. Mount Gambier trainers have dominated the Millicent Cup in recent times, winning five of the past six races. Former Millicent man Jamie Opperman won it in 2009 with Knock Knock, Wayne Walters has won it twice (General Mackjosh in 2011 and Luckzat last year) as has Michael O’Leary (Evenmoreaction in 2012 and 2013). The Millicent Cup over 2100 metres offers $35,000 in stakemoney and is the second richest race of the season on the Limestone Coast. The festivities for Millicent Cup weekend kick start on Friday week (May 1) with the calcutta at the Somerset Hotel.
