Hugh will perform at the Glenroy Shearing Shed and Coonawarra Hall during the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival. He was invited by event organisers to debut his laidback folky style as part of this year’s entertainment. “I am excited to be playing at the festival after playing at the open mic competition a few times,” he said. “I think my music will suit the show at Glenroy because of the intimate atmosphere.” After growing up in the area, Hugh moved to Adelaide to study science at university before travelling overseas. He spent time in Spain, Europe, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden, which inspired his writing. While on the road, he completed unfinished tracks and wrote new songs. The music is set to appear on a debut EP to be released before June. With a passion for music and science, Hugh has maintained a balanced lifestyle of study and performing. “When I was a kid, I learnt to play violin and cello at school and have loved music ever since,” he said. “I would like my music to take me as far as possible, but I am just as passionate about science - so I have a back-up plan.” Hugh is currently making arrangements to move to Denmark later this year to study for another science degree. “I really liked Denmark when Program offers fun for all PEOPLE of all ages can create, explore and relax during the annual Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival next weekend. With a program jam-packed with activities, exhibitions and live music, the region will be filled with an infectious atmosphere. The festival is headlined by the John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize competition and Co-Opera’s performance of Cosi Fan Tutte. Big money is up for grabs for the annual prize and Co-Opera will warm hearts with a passionate performance. The Cosi Fan Tutte stage is set for hilarious comedy, tempered in Mozart’s miraculous way with moments of true human pathos. Children are catered for in many ways with workshops and live performances. The Penola Community Library’s Kids Time will be an adventurous and playful event with the theme of “under the sea”. An actor from the Penola Players will read to the children and musician Jarrad Kilsby will provide an interactive element to the morning. Families can also look forward to the unique shadow puppet performance titled Sticks Stones Broken Bones at Rymill Hall on the Sunday afternoon. Visitors can get involved with a wide range of workshops on offer throughout the weekend. Learn all about knitting, silver smithing, linocut print making, acting, photography, cake decorating, writing and poetry from experienced artists. I visited and it is a place I can imagine spending a long period of time,” he said. “I did some performing in Copenhagen, which I really loved.” The 25-year-old will be performing all original songs at the festival. “I want to perform the music which will appear on my EP and give the audience a great show,” he said.
