SA Permit No.T15/429 cONquER THE cOlD THIS WINTER With last season’s crops in the silos, Mr Ballantyne believes the local suppliers to the agricultural sector would have experienced a good flow-on effect for their businesses. “Overall the cropping returns for 2014/15 across Millicent and district were better than average,” he said. “Some crop yields surprised us and some were frighteningly good.” He said graziers were also enjoying good returns with sheep reaching over $6kg, while cattle topped $2kg. Millicent’s official rainfall recording station is at the offices of the South Eastern Water Conservation and Drainage Board. April’s rainfall amounted to 42.2mm, while there was 65.4mm recorded in the opening 21 days of May. Business leader looks to future From front page For the fifth year of the awards, the presentation night will change to become a gala event with a buffet style supper. The event will be held on July 25 at the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre with live band Juicy-X. “The MBCA committee would like to see Millicent businesses each get up a table and have a great night out,” Ms Chapple said. Ms Chapple said the third way to support the MBCA would be to take advantage of the training opportunities available. “We are getting great support from Wattle Range Council and it is possible to qualify for grants and subsidies,” she said. “There are three training opportunities ahead for local business owners and their employees. “A visual merchandising specialist will present an evening session in Millicent. “There are also plans to offer subsided places through TAFE South East in the Certificate III in Micro Business Operations course and the possibility of taking part in the Town Ambassador program. “Council arranged the energy forum last month and it was very worthwhile. “We need businesses to take part in such events to access grant funding.” Originally from Jamestown in the Mid North region of South Australia, Ms Chapple spent her early working life as a hairdresser. She moved to Millicent in 1994 with her husband Steve and their sons Brad and Nathan. Her husband’s work as a police officer meant the family shifted home every four or five years with his postings to Adelaide, Port Pirie and Murray Bridge. Within a couple of years of moving to Millicent, the couple decided the town would be their permanent home and they purchased a house. Although elder son Brad has since moved to Culcairn in New South Wales, younger son Nathan has also adopted Millicent as his home. He undertook an apprenticeship in the building trade, now operates his own business and has married and is raising a family. About 13 years ago, Ms Chapple decided to run her own business for the first time and opened the Alternate Life Health and Wellness Centre, which is focused on natural therapies. She has served on the MBCA committee for the past decade and is the first woman to chair the group in its history, which dates back to the 1980s. Ms Chapple welcomes the involvement of businesses in the running of the MBCA. “We do have a fantastic committee and all positions are filled,” she said. “Over the years, I sometimes get asked about when we are leaving Millicent and I say that I do love living here”.
