Machinery damages Robe district roads UNSEALED roads in the region are being damaged by unsuitable traffic. Robe District Council works manager Trevor Hondow publicly aired his concerns to the May monthly council meeting. “It has come to our attention that ribbed rollers and tracked type equipment are travelling on our rural roads, causing damage,” Mr Hondow said. “It goes without saying this causes unnecessary damage and, with one patrol grader, it is difficult to repair when the grader is on the other side of the district.” Meanwhile, Mr Hondow went on to describe other works across the council area. “Part of the Robe foreshore lawn near the public toilet has been closed to the public so the Robe Bowling Club could undertake upgrades on the bowling green,” he said. “The walking track on the continuation of McIntyre Street walkway has now been completed with the safety fencing finished. “The Dening Street community waste- water management system pipeline replacement has started.” Construction work on Powell’s Road from the cross roads two kilometres east of Nora Creina is near completion with the final trim the only element left to complete. The roads graded in the last month were Ackson Park Road, Evans Cave Road, Woodleigh Lane, Wildfield Road, Nora Creina Road, Jorgensen’s Road, Sneyd Island Road, Lake Hawdon Road, Lous Lane, Hermitage Road, Powells Road, Bog Lane, Ballentynes Road, Mt Bruce Road, Fayrefield Lane, West Avenue and West Avenue South Road and Davenport Street. The South Eastern Times, Thursday, May 28, 2015 - 23 SIXTH WINNER: Redgum Country owner Wendy Richardson, The South Eastern Times general manager Robin Reid and Bendigo Bank customer relationship manager Emma Horrigan congratulate Heather McBain (second left) after she won a $1000 bank account in the Shop Local Win Big competition. Cash always in style A NELSON woman has walked away from Redgum Country in Mount Gambier with a spring in her step after being announced as the sixth winner of the Shop Local Win Big competition. The competition is a joint initiative of The South Eastern Times, Border Watch, the Mount Gambier and District branch of the Bendigo Community Bank and more than 100 local businesses. As a keen shopper with an interest in fashion, Nelson’s Heather McBain received a pleasant surprise when she was selected as the recipient of a $1000 bank account. “I was very surprised when I received the phone call,” Ms McBain said. “I have never won anything like this before.” Ms McBain said she was unsure what to do with the money, but was going to save it for now. “Two of my daughters were just engaged, so I might save the money and buy a nice dress for the weddings,” she said. “I’ll think of something to spend it on.” Redgum Country owner Wendy Richardson said the competition was beneficial for local businesses in the region. “It encourages people to look in-store instead of online,” Ms Richardson said. “I think it is great, the money is going back into the community.” Mount Gambier and District Community Bendigo Bank branch manager Tracy Koop presented Ms McBain with the $1000 prize and congratulated her on the win. “It is a fantastic initiative,” she said. It is the second time in two years a winner has been selected from Redgum Country. NEWS 23 IN BRIEF Golf club lease THE Beachport Golf Club looks set to extend its lease of 22 hectares of publicly-owned land for a further 21 years. The existing lease of Beachport Golf Club was negotiated in 1993 with the former District Council of Beachport under the chairmanship of councillor Don Ferguson. The original lease with the golfers provide for a right of renewal for a further 21-year period based on the same terms and conditions of the original lease. Wattle Range Council has decided that there will be an amendment to the new lease once resolution of the land issues in relation to the road reserves and access over fairway five have been resolved.
