They are taking part in the 40th annual Finke Desert Race which is a 460km challenge from Alice Springs to Finke and return. Their motorbikes will be joined by field of 600 other two and four-wheel bikes as well as 140 vehicles. All competitors will have an 8.3km prologue on Saturday and then make the 230km ride to Finke on Sunday. They make the return trip on Monday which is a public holiday for the Queen’s Birthday. For Fennell and White, pa 21ge no no mercy taken this weekend’s race is the culmination of more than a year in planning. Along with family members, they attended the 2014 Finke Desert Classic and caught the off-road racing ‘bug’. Their families will be back cheering them on in the so-called “Red Centre” this weekend. Fennell has had to shut his Wade’s Small Engine Services this week while White is on leave from his job at the Banner Mitre 10 hardware store in Millicent. It is not a cheap pastime to race as Fennell’s new Suzuki 450cc bike cost $9000 before some accessories were added. Furthermore, nomination and other licensing fees run into many hundreds of dollars but Fennell would not have it any other way. The match was predicted to be to be a percentage booster for the Roos, going on this season’s Round 2 result when the Saints went down by 100 points. However, this time it was a different story as the young Millicent players took it up to their opponents, keeping the final margin to just 24 points.
