12 NEWS Head for charity work shown J.L. ‘FRED’ SMITH email@example.com MILLICENT child care worker Teagan Harvey has recently swapped her long blonde tresses for a cropped hair style and raised $5000 in the process With two of her close family members dying from cancer and a close family friend currently battling the disease, Teagan was prepared to have her head shaved as a way of generating funds for research into breast, bone and bowel cancer. Supporters gathered at the Somerset Hotel in Millicent on Christmas Eve to watch the transforming event. Teagan set an initial target of $2000 and this was well and truly exceeded. The Gladys Smith Child Care Centre employee placed collection tins around Millicent and Southend, used an on-line fundraising campaign and gathered more donations on the headshaving night. The 24-year-old decided to split the funds equally among four cancer-related charities - the Millicent Cancer Support Group, Bladder Cancer Foundation, Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Association and the Bone Cancer Foundation. MCSG president Ange Leopold said its group’s share of $1250 would be donated towards research into all forms of cancer. She said the donation shows the generosity of the local community. “Unfortunately, many of our community are touched directly or indirectly by cancer,” she said. MCSG vice president Karla Werchon said 2016 had been one of the best fund raising years in the group’s history. She said the next major donation by the MCSG would be the provision of new day surgery chairs at Millicent and District Hospital while its next major fundraiser would be the annual Mothers Day walk in May. For Teagan, the impetus to raise funds was prompted by the deaths of people close to her. She said the idea of a headshaving stunt took shape a few months ago and supporters like the Somerset Hotel provided backing. “It’s only hair, I thought,” Teagan said. “On the night, local hairdresser Jamey Grgetic tied up my hair into 18 plaits and these were auctioned off by my dad Derek Harvey.” “The first plait went for $350 and it was bought by Ross Tenney.
