He has wide football experience and is currently the high performance manager with the AFL in Darwin. His son regards the Northern Territory Premier League as the highest level he has played and above the SA Country Championships level. There are a few ex-AFL players in the competition TOP END TOURIST: New Millicent coach Clint Gallio is playing football in Darwin while on holidays. as well as a significant number of Indigenous players. “They are quick, skilful and smart,” Gallio said. Gallio was coy about the possibility of any Northern Territory Premier League players lining up with Millicent during the 2017 season. “I would like to bring home a ruckman,” he joked. Gallio has previously played all his football with Mount Burr in the Mid South East Football League. He has four league medals to go with the hat-trick of A Grade premiership successes from 2009-2011 and further grand final wins in 2015 and again last season. He won the 2008 Malseed Medal as the best and fairest in the senior colts competition, the 2012 and 2013 Walker Medals (for runner-up to the Mail Medal) and the 2015 Mail Medal. Numerous representa- tive honours have come Gallio’s way during his underage and senior career including selection in the 2016 SA Country training squad. His 149th and last game in a green-and-gold guernsey was the 2016 grand final at Hatherleigh when he claimed the Stan Jones Memorial Medal as beston-ground. Hyland wins medal DESPITE the holiday season, it has been business as usual at the Millicent Golf Club. The course has been host to many visitors enjoying the layout in between the extreme weather. In a fitting result, the first monthly medal for 2017 saw club stalwart Jim Hyland have a day out to claim the honours. As a volunteer Hyland has spent many hours donating his time working on the course, which has been kept in top condition. Last Thursday saw a stableford round played in warm and windy conditions, with good numbers to greet the starter. Ron Hateley must have thought it was only a nine-hole competition as he jumped out the blocks early to win with 22 points on the front nine. Terry Chant was close behind in second with 21 points and Andrew Ferguson grabbed third with 19. However, Hateley went missing on the back nine and it was his playing partner Steve Clarke from Penola who rounded up the field to win the 18-hole competition and the day with 37 points. Chant kept his good form going to hold onto second in a count back from another visitor, James Fullen, who grabbed third after both players finished with 36 points. Mark Pilmore was lucky enough to play one decent shot for the day to win the nearest to the pin award on the par 3 fifth hole, but still managed to miss his two-foot birdie putt with a lip out. With the temperature expected to top the 40 degree mark last Saturday for the monthly medal, all the early tee times were booked out as it was all about beating the heat. In the A Grade it was an in-form Phil Hunter who claimed the honours with 81 off-the-stick for a nett 70. Adrian Duldig was just two shots behind with nett 72, from Peter Saint who played well to finish with a nett 74. In the B Grade it was Hyland who won both his grade and the monthly medal in a count-back from Hunter, finishing with a nett 70. Scott Lonergan found some good form to grab second spot with a nett 74, while Andrew Ferguson finished in third with a nett 76. Nearest the pin winners for the day went to Brian Duldig on the third hole, Peter Saint won the fifth, “Spike Warren” the 13th and Terry Chant the 17th. Ferguson was closest for two shots on the ninth hole, while Andrew Varcoe was closest for two shots on the 18th. Birdies paid out two balls each to Hyland on the third and Craig Kuiper on the fifth. In the putting competition Ian Greenwood got the nod in a four-way count-back with 27 putts. This week sees a stableford competition today for the sixth round of the summer masters trophy. Nine-hole twilight golf is on tonight with the tee off between 4.30pm and 5.30 pm. Saturday is also a stableford competition with all players welcome. Roessel starts darts season in style THE Millicent and District Darts Association kicked off their 2017 summer season with a 15-dart competition Tuesday. A board round robin saw 27 players compete - five to six on a board - in a best-of-three format.
