14 SPORT 14 SPORT SPORT Allan advances MILLICENT’S Jess Allan ORT Allan Allan advances MILLICENT’S Jess Allan recently received a boost to her basketball aspirations, with inclusion in the South Australian Under 20s national team. Allan started playing basket- ball at the age of seven in the local Under 10’s competition, after watching her sister Sarah play sparking her interest in the sport. She played in the Millicent basketball junior competition all the way through to Under 16’s, before she progressed into seniors. Allan was also an active member of the Millicent Magic town team, where she started as a bottom-aged player and moved through the grades, until she graduated last season in Under 18’s. Allan did not believe she would make the South Australian Under 20’s National Basketball team this year, with the news coming to her as a pleasant surprise. “I simply wanted to expose myself for future (next year’s) selections,” she said. This year the women’s Under 20’s national basketball team has five metro players along with five country players. Allan trains for two hours every Saturday morning in Adelaide, with occasional Sunday sessions as well. Many of the sessions have consisted of trial games against teams such as the Under 18’s SA Metro team, Forestville ABA and various other district teams, while others mainly focus on structures and court plays. Allan has prepared herself accordingly for the opportunity, following a strict fitness and health structure in the lead up to the event. “On top of my regular Saturday team trainings, we have been encouraged to prepare our fitness independently,” she said. “I shoot at the stadium on a regular basis, as well as go for runs. “I also follow a meal plan, as I believe my diet is very important to the lead up of such a big event.” The tournament is currently underway in Bendigo. It includes five minor round games against Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland, with finals to follow. lenge. “There will no doubt be WNBL scouts watching the tournament, as well as Australian coaches and selectors, so everyone will be out to make a good impression.” Allan is currently a member of the Millicent Saints A Grade SECBL competition and was recently a member of the Millicent CBL team. ON THE RISE: Millicent Basketball Club’s 17-year-old star player Jess Allan is currently competing in the National Basketball Championship in Bendigo for South Australia’s Under 20 team. Consistency proves key for Kent LAKE Bonney Sporting Clays held the second 50-target shoot for this year’s calendar earlier this month. The day started with overcast skies and humid conditions, with course setters spacing the course out across the grounds to allow for the optional flush shoot to run in front of the club rooms. Jeremy Kent remains the year’s most consistent shooter as he finished with a near perfect score of 49/50 to win high-gun for the second time. C GRADE COMPETITORS: Alex Gordon took out the C Grade class ahead of Ian Lister and Norm Smith at the second 50-target event for Lake Bonney Sporting Clays. Competitors were keen to take advantage of the chance to practice their skills at the flush stand, but unfortunately torrential rain hit the shooting ground just after lunchtime and made it difficult to enjoy the opportunity. The practice stand will be available again on March 5 and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy, for those who are not looking on entering the competition shooting. Nominations started slowly early in the day, but by the time they closed a total of 66 shooters had entered the competition. Once again it was good to see new faces as well as some old ones returning after taking a break. The Wright father and son team of Chris and Declan, proved they are ready for the coming duck season, as they did not allow the rain to affect their accuracy, both winning their grades. In order to decide on the SOLID PERFORMANCES: Meagan Millard (left) won the women’s shoot, while Tash Bellinger (right) came in third. Club president Herb Whitehead (centre) presented the prizes for the 50-target event. 14 - The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, February 14, 2017 placegetters a countback was used instead of shoot offs due to everyone being wet and not while Joe Densley took out A Grade ahead of Tom Weir. Club president Herb Whitehead scored first in B Grade, while Alex Gordon placed first in C Grade. Wayne Evans won the Vets by one target and Greg Todd was a clear winner in Super Vets ahead of Peter Klieve. The women’s competition was a tight finish that saw Tash Bellinger take first ahead of Janette Densely and Meagan Millard. Mason Patzel shot a consistent 28/50 for juniors. The club will host its next AA CHAMPION: The Lake Bonney Sporting Clays’ second 50-Target event saw Chris Wright take out the win in the AA Grade competition with a strong shoot of 47/50. wanting to spend anymore time in the rain. Garry Dangerfield took second in B Grade from Herb Meinck, as did Ian Lister from Norm Smith in C Grade. Veterans was another tight competition that saw Graham Lamond place second and Neville Kent finish third. Peter Caskey hung onto third place in Super Vets over Bill Morrison. Other winners for the day included Malcom Whitehead who claimed second and Health Telford in third for the AA Grade, event on Sunday and competitors are reminded it is a handicapped shoot so handicaps must be up to date.
