NEWS 5 IN BRIEF Government grants available to support community projects COMMUNITY groups can now apply for a share of $1m available through the State Government’s Fund My Community grant program. Grants of between $10,000 and $100,000 are available for projects aimed at supporting disadvantaged, isolated or vulnerable South Australians. A public vote will decide which projects should receive a share of the funding. CHARITABLE CAUSE: Quilts for a Cause participants Helen Williams and Kathy Patten are congratulated on their Silver Award by Lions Club of Millicent president Alan Rolfe. Craft talents help raise cancer funds RAQUEL MUSTILLO raquel@setimes.com.au A GROUP of communityminded crafters using the art of quilting to pursue advances in curing childhood cancers have been recognised for their efforts. Craftswomen from the Quilts for a Cause program were honoured by the Lions Club of Millicent for their donation of 13 quilts, which raised more than $6000 when auctioned for charity. Lions president Alan Rolfe praised the dedicated work of the highly skilled artisans at a recent presentation ceremony held at the Millicent and District Community Club. “We received the quilts which we send all over Australia to be NATIONAL RECOGNITION: The Christmas cheer for Millicent’s Target Country has continued after winning the UnitingCare Xmas Appeal Shooting Star Award for all Target stores across Australia. The accolade follows the store raising the most donations per capita for the 2016 UnitingCare and Target Christmas Appeal. UnitingCare representatives Elaine Bentley and Gloria Garrett congratulated the Millicent team as Target state manager Ian O’Hanlon (back left) and Target chief operating officer Andrew Myers (back right) presented the award to Maxine Lang, Debbie Tincknell, Michelle Lane, store manager Ann Nowak. South Australia raised just shy of $150,000, while the Target UnitingCare Christmas Appeal raised more than $1.2m in total. www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au auctioned and we got $6,000 for them,” he said. “It’s great the ladies donate the quilts because they have raised a lot of money over the years and it is a lot of work. “We are very grateful for their contribution and they should be recognised for their hard work.” Mr Rolfe said the funds raised from the auction were donated to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, a not-for-profit aimed at funding scientific and clinical cancer research. Established in 2009, the foundation’s prime focus is to increase the survival rates of childhood cancer by supporting Australian and international cancer research efforts. “It is a shame to see young people with a lot of promise in their life suddenly cut down by cancer,” Mr Rolfe said. “Having to go through pain and suffering during their treatment is bad enough for any adult, but it is pretty demoralising to see young people having to go through it. “Even though they have cancer, they always seem cheery, but we need to support childhood cancer research so children can enjoy their childhood. “The foundation mainly does research for cures but it are trying to get a DNA database of people with cancer. “If they are able to cure it through the DNA, it saves people going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy which is really a scatter-gun approach.” Geltwood Festival committee member Sue Correll said the group was overwhelmed on receiving the award. “To hear the amount of money the quilts raised is amazing,” she said. “We are really lucky people donate quilts because they take a lot of time and cost a lot of money. “Quilts come from craft groups and individuals locally and elsewhere and we are very grateful for the support we receive from the quilting community.” Initiated by the late Elaine Pepper, the Quilts for a Cause participants have donated their works to charities including the Leukaemia Foundation, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Little Heroes Foundation and Angel Flight. “Quilts for a Cause is something we do to give back,” Ms Correll said. “Cancer seems to be very prevalent in our area and elsewhere and we hope we can make a difference by doing something we love to do.” Rendelsham Community Town Plan Consultation Session Wattle Range Council is assisting all of the townships within the Council area to develop Ten Year Community Town Plans. These plans enable Council to understand key elements of the individual townships needs and priorities, when considering annual budgets, infrastructure development and projects. With the assistance of the Rendelsham Sports & Progress Association members, an initial draft for the Rendelsham plan has been developed. Council staff will be available to take feedback on the draft at an initial community consultation session between the hours of 6 pm and 8.30 pm on Tuesday, 7 March 2017 in the Rendelsham Community Hall. Copies of the draft plan are available on the Council website or alternatively hardcopies can be collected from the Millicent Council Office.
