18 SPORT Football teams take shape Bowlers J.L. ‘FRED’ SMITH fred@setimes.com.au HATHERLEIGH has appointed club stalwart Darren Paul as its B Grade coach for the coming season. The former A Grade skipper and triple premiership player clocked up his 200th game in a blue and gold jumper midway through last season. He joined the club in 2002 from Huonville in his native Tasmania and he was a key figure in Hatherleigh’s winning grand final team which ended a 31 year premiership drought. The rugged utility player also suited up for the subsequent Eagles flags in 2005 and 2008. The 40-year-old succeeds Robbie Bowman who spent three seasons in the role and he will continue as the team’s assistant coach. Meanwhile, the playing stocks of the Eagles continue to grow with the signing of Robe pair Jake Keane and Michael Hansberry to go with ex-Rooster coach Dylan Coxon. On the debit, the eldest of the three Waring brothers is heading to Queensland. Tom Waring has lodged a clearance to play in Mackay. The rumour mill is suggesting ex-Tantanoola and Sturt (SANFL) ruckman Nick Pearce has been linked with local clubs. His brother Jack Pearce is moving from Tantanoola to Hatherleigh. Cordy returns FORMER Kongorong skipper Brad Cordy has returned to the fold after a season in the Kyabram District Football League in his native Victoria. Cordy was last seen in the MSEFL in 2015 when he played solely in the B Grade and won the Carthew Medal as the competition’s best and fairest player. The former Victorian Country Football League representative played the 2013 and 2014 seasons with South Gambier. Kinsman Matthew Cordy will also be transferring to the Hawks from the same Victorian league. The paperwork has also been submitted by the Hawks for three players from the Western Border Football League: Bodhi Pannenburg, Bryn Weaver and Tyler Jones. Jones has played in a premiership with Kalangadoo and his father Michael is a past Kongorong player. Among the other players on the move are Port MacDonnell premiership player Mal Lewis who is returning to North Gambier. Tantanoola’s Cohen Williams is looking to play in a suburban competition in Adelaide. Busy times THE players and supporters of the Mount Burr United Football Club have spent much of the offseason on improving the facilities at “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval. The licensed premises have been re-painted while a derelict exterior toilet block has been demolished. The Mozzies defeated the LAST Tuesday night Millicent Bowling Club contested with strong winds as players took to the green for its Night Owls competition. Bowlers were required to adapt to the conditions and those who failed to allow for the wind soon found they were bowling way off-target. Despite this factor, there were some who remained strong on their rinks, with the Royal Reserves team of Sarah Ross, Frank Cooper, Arnold Damhuis and Wayne Ross winning all but two ends. With only one week left, next week becomes crucial to the outcome of this year’s competition, both with touches as well as the leaders in the three divisions. Touches - White Division: Robert Hyland 3; Blue Division: Paul Bosco 3; Red Division: Ian Johnson 3. Results ROOSTER TURNS EAGLE: Robe on-baller Jake Keane is joining Hatherleigh. Kalangadoo Magpies for the 2016 flag. Among the pre-season prepara- tions by the black-and-whites has been a “boot camp” at the farming property of club stalwarts Jim and Phillip Mules. The boot camp placed an empha- sis on team-work, endurance and problem-solving. Reunion time THE 1997 20-year Nangwarry premiership reunion will be held over the weekend of April 21 to 23. The grand final win was the third to be coached by Phil Muhovics who passed away in 2010. All Saints premiership players, former players, current players and supporters are encouraged and welcome to attend. The reunion committee comprises Graham Harris, Graham Hill, Peter Radley and Trevor Fenn and the event has been timed to coincide with a home match against Glencoe. The Saints defeated the Murphies by 21 points in the 1997 season decider. FRESH FIELDS: Past Kalangadoo premiership player Tyler Jones is leaving South Gambier and joining Kongorong.
