The South Eastern Times, Thursday, March 30, 2017 - 11 to donate their subsidy for equipment purchases. “They not only give up their time and vehicles, even on public holidays, they also like to further their contribution to the community by donating their money to help locals,” she said. “In the case of the flying doctors, the choice to donate money was very easy because there are not too many people with family or friends that haven’t used the service. “It is an important service and one that we need to keep in our rural communities.” Among the community projects the donations have contributed to are a $2000 patient lifting system for Boneham Aged Care Services and a $4950 dishwasher/ steriliser for the kitchen at Millicent and District Hospital where meals for clients are prepared. “The main objective of the donation is always to keep it in the local community and help our elderly and disadvantaged residents,” Ms Forbes said. “It is completely up to the volunteers if they want to donate the payment or not. “Volunteers are community members and they do it for the love of it, so they are always willing to donate more to fund essential community projects.” Royal Flying Doctor Service Millicent and District Support Group president John Chalmers said he was “overwhelmed” by the generosity of volunteers. “I’m incredibly surprised by the donation,” he said. “I can’t even believe all of the money donated by people that had the choice to save it. “This donation will help the Royal Flying Doctor Service continue flying.” The night parrot was considered extinct until three years ago when it was last seen in a patch of spinifex 2000km from where the bird was rediscovered in Western Queensland. Mr Boyle has spent a significant period of the past 20 years at the Broome Bird Observatory and he has spoken publicly about the significance of the bird, which is described as like a “fat budgerigar”. “I grew up knowing the bird was extinct and didn’t expect to ever see one in my life,” Mr Boyle said. “I just knew it was a fairly small green and yellow parrot that used to live in deserts in spinifex countries that was sort of the unseeable, that it was the Holy Grail if you get to see one”. He is the son of Millicent couple Noel and Sheila Boyle. Church hall in full bloom SAINT Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Hall will be in full bloom this weekend for the Millicent Floral Art and Garden Club Floral Art Display. Over 40 traditional and contemporary arrangements of fresh, dried and artificial flowers will decorate the hall from tomorrow for the three days. Demonstrations by club instructor Anne Ashby will be held at 11am and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday and will incur a small additional charge. Adult entry is $5 and includes morning or afternoon tea.
