NEWS 17 IN BRIEF Election pledge ‘a cheap ploy’ THE state Liberals’ election pledge to have a 10 year moratorium on fracking in the South East is a “cheap ploy to win a few seats”, a Labor MP has claimed. Member for Kaurna Chris Picton slammed the oppositions proposed policy in parliament last week, adding the State Government is committed on incentivising gas developers to “get out there and drill for more gas”. “We want to get the gas out of the ground,” he said. “They want to ban gas developments happening in South Australia. “They want to send shivers down the spine of every investor in gas developments in South Australia, which are of course the backbone of our electricity system. “It is a cheap ploy to win a few seats from Nick Xenophon down in the South East, and it is putting all of South Australia’s electricity future at risk.” EXCELLENCE HONOURED: Mayura Station manager Scott de Bruin (second left) is congratulated on his superior tourism achievements by Tourism Minister Leon Bignell, Governor of South Australia Hieu Van Le and his wife Lan Le at a reception at Government House. Mayura honoured INTERNATIONALLY renowned beef producer Mayura Station has been honoured for its superior achievements by the Governor of South Australia at a special ceremony in Adelaide. Mayura Station manager Scott de Bruin was among 30 South Australian tourism businesses acknowledged by Governor Hieu Van Le for their excellence in tourism. The reception held at Government House celebrated the state tourism award winners and seven national winners who were recognised for their recent successes and business practices. The Tasting Room was awarded gold in the Tourism Restaurant and Catering Services category at the 2016 South Australian Tourism Awards. South Australian Tourism Industry Council chairman Eoin Loftus said the reception was a great honour for state and national winners. “This is the first time tourism award winners have been recognised with an event at Government House which signifies the growing importance of the tourism industry to the South Australian economy,” he said. “The tourism awards highlight the hard work and innovation of the people at the frontline of our tourism industry. “All South Australians should be extremely proud of their achievements and the amazing visitor experiences that South Australia has to offer.” Mr Picton said gas development was “very important” for the future of the state. “If we look at the gas prices and the increase we have seen, it tracks very neatly with the increase in electricity prices because we are a gas state,” he said. “Sadly, we have not seen enough exploration and drilling of gas in South Australia.” Taxpayers reassured with reforms TAXPAYERS will receive certainty politicians are carefully spending their money with the introduction of further reforms to parliamentarians’ work expenses. The changes will aim to define a test where politicians will only be able to claim expenses when the dominant purpose of their journey is to undertake parliamentary business. Additional reforms include introducing a clear definition of parliamentary business to provide more certainty and establishing new obligations around parliamentarians’ expenditure.
