Special honour THE Millicent Bowling Club’s Annual General Meeting was held recently with all board positions filled. Newly elected president Colin Pye thanked outgoing president Steve Carnellor and the executive for their professionalism shown in the past year and said he hoped to uphold the high standards they set. After it was cancelled the previous week due to rain, 20 bowlers took to the Millicent greens last Thursday to challenge for the honours in the 2-4-2 event. Peter Varcoe and Sam Schofield had a tough contest on rink seven against Derk Pietersma and David Reichelt, but eventually found the win 21+0. On rink nine, Malcolm Wright and Lyn Scudds recorded a score of 29+3, while John Scudds and Dawn Bellman on rink 10 came in with 32+18. Terry Barnes and Ed Fitter finished runner-up with 33+11, behind Andre Reinders and Peter Delaney who scored 34+20. Sunday was the club’s presentation day for 2017, which started with two games played between the women and the men, with the women claiming the shield with an impressive 115-98 win. Before the presentations, Pye welcomed Jim Edgcumbe as he made a special presentation for his dedication to the sport. Edgcumbe started his long association with bowls when he was accredited as a national umpire in October 1976, before gaining recognition as an umpire’s tutor in 1988. For the next 28 years he served as the umpire’s trainer of the Millicent Bowling Club - along with many other Lower South East clubs - and was the Lower South East Bowling Association’s umpire liaison officer for many of those years. Pye said he was honoured to represent the members of the club in presenting Edgcumbe with this certificate as a tribute for all he has given the region, club and sport of bowls over the past 41 years.
