NEWS 5 Rail land project ‘not core business’ RAQUEL MUSTILLO raquel@setimes.com.au THE Wattle Range Rate Payers Group has urged Wattle Range Council to ditch the proposed $1.1m Millicent Rail Lands redevelopment, claiming it is “not core business”. Group member Peter Altschwager said the proposed development was not an appropriate project for council to undertake. “Our group is very much against councils becoming property developers,” he said. “That is not council’s core business and if they stuck to their core business, they’d make a much better job of it. “History is littered with government or semi-government Greens candidate announced GREENS SA has announced current sitting MLC Tammy Franks as the preselected lead candidate for the Legislative Council in the March 2018 State Election. Ms Franks was first elected into the Upper House at the 2010 state election after achieving 6.6pc of the statewide vote, joining leader Mark Parnell in the Legislative Council. The Greens SA has been represented continuously in the state parliament since 2004 and in the Upper House since 2006. ac.care leader appointed A NEW chief executive has been chosen to head major social welfare agency ac.care. Rob Foggo announced his retirement late last year after 23 years in the role and his successor will be Shane Maddock. He will leave his senior role with Red Cross in Adelaide and start work in July. Formerly known as Anglican Community Care, ac.care was founded in 1986 and now has nine offices and 250 staff. organisations trying to get into property development and losing taxpayer or ratepayer money hand over fist. “We fully appreciate it would be a nice place for a housing development, but for council to be involved it would be a backward step.” Mr Altschwager raised concerns with the contamination of the site and the purchase price from the State Government. The site, which is part owned by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, is deemed contaminated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “At this stage I think council should first work out if they are able to sell the land and how much they are going to spend to develop it and bring it up to a safe standard,” he said. Picture: J.L. “FRED” SMITH Students demonstrate public speaking skills MILLICENT High School Year 11 students Mason O’Rielly and Imahgen Hecht recently demonstrated their public speaking skills at the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition. Held at St Martins Lutheran College, the competition attracted 28 entrants from six schools across the region, including Millicent, Penola, Mount Gambier, Naracoorte and Grant high schools. The duo prepared eight-minute speeches on Hidden Agendas, with Mason speaking about the hidden agen- das of different countries, while Imahgen discussed human interaction and exclusion. Mason spoke about the hidden agendas of different countries around the world and Imahgen also spoke on the topic of Hidden Agendas, with her speech discussing how we treat others and the issue of exclusion. The speaking competition has been held since 1975 and aims to contribute to the welfare and personal growth of Australian youth. “I also find it offensive we actually have to pay commercial rates for that piece of land when the Crown has had it all of that time and done nothing with it.” Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi said it was necessary for council to be involved in the remediation of the contaminated site. He said he was confident the land would be sold to council below commercial rates. “The important part here is the land is contaminated and it will not be developed unless council plays a role in developing it,” he said. “It would be unviable for the private sector to undertake this or it could be cherry picked and contaminated areas not be dealt with. “We believe council will be able to remediate the land to Ratepayer group welcomes general revenue increase a standard which is regarded safe by the EPA.” Mr Gandolfi said the project was in the best interests of the community and would stimulate economic benefit to Millicent. “We’ll always have the knockers that are anti-development, but through community consultation over a number of years, the Millicent community has identified the opportunity for redevelopment,” he said. “The site has been an eyesore as a wasteland for 20 years in a prime location. “Council will undertake community consultation about the development on the layout, the mixture of residential properties and open space through concept designs. “Council will be seeking tenders from the private sector as part of the development.” WATTLE Range Rate Payers Group has welcomed the council’s proposed .5pc general rate revenue rise despite concerns about discrepancies among other South East local government areas. The community lobby group said it was pleased council had sought to deviate from council’s long-term forecast increase of 4pc, but would still lobby to see rates decrease across the region. “While we welcome the council’s effort to have reduced the rate rise, until it gets to the point where we are reducing to a comparable level with neighbouring councils, we will not be satisfied and neither will any other ratepayer,” group member Martin Cameron said. “At the end of the day, people are still going to be paying high rates because at the moment there is no effort to reduce rates. “We do not intend to stop campaigning on behalf of the ratepayers until we detect or see a move towards a reduction of rates by comparison to other Limestone Coast councils.” Saturday WINNING NUMBERS 42 45 17 15 24 18 Saturday, May 27th, 2017 Numbers SUPPS 35 36 Public Consultation Proposed renaming of portion of South-West Terrace, Beachport to Eric Snook Drive Following Council’s initial consultation in relation to the renaming of the northern portion of South West Terrace from Parklands Terrace to the intersection of Scenic Drive, Council has resolved to proceed with the re–naming of the above section of road.
