NEWS 5 Obstetrics support sought RAQUEL MUSTILLO raquel@setimes.com.au WATTLE Range Council has sought the support of key Liberal Party members to reinstate obstetrics to the Millicent and District Hospital should they be elected to government in March 2018. Council will seek a public commitment from State Liberal leader Steven Marshall, Member for MacKillop Mitch Williams, Liberal candidate for MacKillop Nick McBride and Liberal Party Millicent branch president Peter Altschwager to return birth- ing and other services cut from the hospital. Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi said public support for the reinstatement of services at the hospital was in the best interests of the community. “In recent times, essential services were removed from the Millicent Hospital such as obstetrics, anaesthetic services and palliative care,” he said. “These services were not only available to the local community, but also to the residents of the Robe and Kingston District Council areas. “We know the current Labor Government abolished obstetrics and has no intention to return those services. “There is a likelihood there will be a change of government and therefore it is crucial we have full support of the opposition.” Millicent Liberal Party branch president Peter Altschwager said the letter would be tabled at the upcoming annual general meeting and discussed by members. “It will be up to the members present to decide,” he said. “I wouldn’t see why they wouldn’t support it.” Millicent community farewells Tzanakis family J.L. ‘FRED’ SMITH fred@setimes.com.au A PUBLIC farewell was held for four members of a Millicent family on Sunday afternoon as they prepare to move to Wallaroo. Around 80 community members and Millicent Baptist Church parishioners took the opportunity to farewell their resident pastor Arthur Tzanakis, his wife Nita and their children Steven and Helen. For the past three years, Pastor Arthur has been an active member of the Millicent community as he has also chaired the Millicent Ministers Association and been an industrial chaplain at various workplaces, including Wattle Range Council and the Kimberly-Clark Australia Millicent Mill. The farewell took the form of an afternoon tea at the Millicent Baptist Church with a dozen members of the gathering taking turns at the microphone when speeches of tribute were made. Among them were members of the church’s prayer, Bible study and prayer groups. Parish secretary Sid Walker thanked all for attending the public farewell. “We are overwhelmed by all the people here,” Mr Walker said. He said Pastor Arthur had made social outreach a key part of his ministry in Millicent. “He has had a short and sweet time with us and he is a big hole in this community.” Another light-hearted gesture came from Baptist church member Terry Heinrich who gave the departing pastor a timer in order to time his church services. Millicent Uniting Church lay preacher Ern Bentley said his own church had also benefitted from Pastor Arthur’s work in the community. “Your replacement will have a tough act to follow,” Mr Bentley said. Speaking on behalf of the Millicent Catholic Parish, Gwenda Browne said the Millicent community will be the poorer for his departure. “You reached out to so many,” Ms Browne said. “Meetings of the Millicent Ministers Association will not be the same.” Retired Baptist pastor Don Groom praised Pastor Arthur for his work as a community pastor who had followed his calling. Picture: J.L. “FRED” SMITH now off on a new adventure.” Pastor Adriano Petraccaro of the Millicent Community Church made two tongue-incheek references which were greeted with much laughter. “Pastor Arthur supports the Hawthorn Football Club, the Liverpool Soccer Club, is a Greek and a Baptist and so he has everything I don’t like in a person,” Pastor Adriano said with a broad smile on his face. “You can be sure pictures of Pastor Arthur packing up and leaving Millicent as well as his arrival at Wallaroo will appear in The South Eastern Times.” On a serious note, Pastor Adriano reflected on his fellow minister’s contribution to the Millicent community. “I am a big fan of yours for everything you have done for the community, for the church and for the churches,” he said. “You go with our love and appreciation and you will leave Kingston woman wins top prize A “COUNTRY girl” from Kingston SE was rocked to the core when she realised she had won a six figure division one prize in Saturday X Lotto. The mother of two held one of the six winning entries nationally and one of the three in South Australia that each won a division one prize of $669,308.39 in the weekend’s draw. She admitted her “brain was foggy” after she received the “dream” phone call from SA Lotteries on Monday morning as she struggled to comprehend the massive prize amount. “It’s a big shock. How much did I win again? That’s a lot of money,” she exclaimed. “I’ve been playing for years and won $1000 before, which I was really excited about, but this is 669 times that - you probably don’t know how life-changing that is for a country girl.” Despite only just coming to the www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au realisation that she had won, she said she had a few ideas as to what to do with her prize. “I’ve been looking at buying some land for months now and I’ve got my eye on a block, so I can actually get that now and won’t have to worry about how,” she said. “I’ll also treat my children of course.” The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased the minimum standard entry of a four-game QuickPick for $2.80 from Kingston Pharmacy. Retail manager Annie Barnett said she was over the moon to have sold a division one winning ticket. “It’s the biggest one we’ve sold here that I can recall, but I hope it won’t be long before we do it again and set a new record,” she said. Along with the winning ticket sold in Kingston, the other two South Australian tickets were sold at Sefton Park and Torrens Park. Pastor Arthur expressed his gratitude on behalf of the family. “We are excited about this new adventure and the next stage of our lives,” he said. “People here in Millicent have left a mark on our lives. “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve and we will always remember the South East.” His new role as the Copper Coast Baptist Church pastor starts in early July and no announcement about the next Millicent pastor has been made.
