NEWS 5 IN BRIEF Liberal politicians hosted at meeting MILLICENT recently hosted three politicians at the annual general meeting of the town’s sole political party. The meeting of the Millicent branch of the Liberal Party was held at the Millicent and District Community Club as well as the yearly forum of the Rendelsham branch of the Liberal Party. The speakers were preselected Liberal candidate for MacKillop Nick McBride, Liberal member for Barker Tony Pasin and retiring Liberal member for MacKillop Mitch Williams. In the Millicent branch elections, Hatherleigh’s Chris Skeer returned to his previously held role of president in succession to Peter Altschwager of Tantanoola. Long-serving branch secretary Susan McDonald of Mount Burr stepped down and was succeeded by Mark Wheal of Thornlea. Carcase classic competition win FURNER graziers Chris and Maris Bateman have won the Southern Grassfed Carcase Classic for the second consecutive year. Their 19-month-old Simmental/Hereford steer was placed first among 720 entries from across South Australia and Victoria. The winners were recently announced at a function at Teys Australia’s Naracoorte abattoir and the competition was also a fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The 339.8kg carcase was among 23 cattle the Batemans entered in the competition over six months ago. Their grand champion carcase scored 90.61 points from a possible 100. It achieved maximum points for saleable meat yield and received a Meat Standards Australia Index of 62.61. Robe mayor joins long march group ROBE District Council Mayor Peter Riseley recently joined the walkers on the Chinese Long March for the final 16.5km of their march from Robe to the Victorian Parliament House in Melbourne. “It was a privilege to be there representing the Robe community,” Mr Riseley said. “Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ address included an apology for the 10 pound poll tax applied to Chinese gold seekers in the 1850s and 1860s.” www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au Contact: Moira Neagle Apt Expression moira.neagle@bigpond.com 0439 880 294 Hate Writing? Let me help COMMUNITY GIVING: South East Property Sales and Management manager Fiona Telfer, administration trainee Abby Wight and sales consultant Melissa Walker prepare to sell plates of homemade goods to raise funds for the real estate agency’s community funnel. Sweet treat raises funds STAFF at South East Property Sales and Management recently served up a treat at their bake sale, raising more than $530 for community projects. Plates of homemade sweet and savoury goods lined the exterior of the George Street business to raise funds for the South East Property Community Funnel. Manager Fiona Telfer said the newly established fund offers philanthropic support to groups for community projects. “We are supporting the community we live in by sponsoring and raising money and awareness for causes and events in the South East area,” she said. “Funds will be added in various ways and then donated back to the community via events and causes which we choose to support. “The idea will have little fundraisers like the bake sale and raise money to sponsor a project. “We’re aiming to fund different projects and we have a few big things we’re going to organise which will be good.” Ms Telfer said the real estate agency had already held a sausage sizzle and successful online auction to raise funds for the funnel. “I’ve always been big on donating to community groups,” she said. “It’s important for businesses to contribute back to the community that contributes to us. “As a new local business, it is really important for us to help the community and strengthen regional development and growth.” Council chief executive salary increases WATTLE Range Council has decided to increase the annual base salary of its chief executive Ben Gower by 2.8pc. During a confidential portion of the June monthly meeting, the council supported the findings of the performance review committee which found Mr Gower had performed his role as chief executive in a manner that meets the requirements of his contract. Council had considered a two page report from Mayor Peter Gandolfi. The pay increase for Mr Gower will be backdated to April 4 which was the 12 month anniversary of his starting duties with Wattle Range Council. Mr Gower’s annual performance review was undertaken on June 2 and the performance review committee consisted of Mr Gandolfi, Deputy Mayor Rob Dycer and Councillors Gwenda Lawlor and John Drew. His performance was assessed through an external review. Mr Gower had signed a five year employ- ment agreement with council at the beginning of last year. Clause 11 of the employment agreement stipulates the annual base salary will be reviewed annually on the anniversary of Mr Gower starting at the council. Any increase in the annual base salary of Mr Gower would be at the absolute discretion of the council. In his report, Mr Gandolfi noted the remuneration review as described in his document is within current budgetary allocations.
