4 - The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au NEWS 4 READY, STEADY, COOK: Kangaroo Inn Area School students Zara O'Loughlin and Lauren Haines check out what's cooking in the Cafe Vireo kitchen. STUDENTS of Kangaroo Inn Area School have been cooking up a storm and proving their kitchen rules at their in-house restaurant Cafe Vireo. In addition to undertaking Certificate I in Hospitality, the master chefs in the making pro- vide healthy lunches for staff and students on a fortnightly basis. The school's food and hospital- ity teacher Angela Leopold said the successful six year program was a way to promote a healthy lifestyle to students. "The students come up with the menu, so it's important that they choose healthy ingredients that appeal to students and staff of all ages," she said. "We're lucky to have a school vegie garden so the students can incorporate a lot of fresh vegeta- bles and fruit into their meals." Ms Leopold said interest in the hospitality program had been on the rise, accrediting the continual popularity to autonomy of choice. "The students are very independent during the cook- ing process, and the hands-on approach is a practical way of understanding food safety and hygiene standards used in com- mercial kitchens," she said. "Working in the cafe is a way students can learn how to work under pressure and work produc- tively in a team environment." Year 10 student Lauren Haines said while her involvement was initially influenced by friends, she was encouraged to continue her hospitality career and main- tain a healthy diet. "I did it to learn how to cook and prepare food properly and learn more about healthy living," she said. "It's good because you can have alotoffunwithit, aswellas learn a lot about how to work in a kitchen and in teams." A COMMUNITY information session on uncon- ventional gas exploration will be convened by the South East Local Government Association (SELGA) in Penola on Monday. The aim is to provide the community with an opportunity to hear information from a range of sources on the exploration and development of unconventional gas in the South East. Topics will include understanding the gas resource and unconventional gas exploration and extraction processes, State Government approval and regulation processes for unconventional gas projects, issues associated with unconventional gas activities and an industry perspective from Beach Energy. In addition to Beach Energy, representatives from the resources and energy and the environ- ment departments, as well as the EPA, will attend. The Roundtable for Unconventional Gas Projects member Anne Daw will discuss issues associated with unconventional gas. The public will have two opportunities to participate in the information session to be held in Rymill Hall at Penola. Between 3pm and 5.30pm, community members are encouraged to drop in to speak with repre- sentatives one-on-one and have their questions answered. From 6.30pm to 9pm, SELGA president Richard Vickery will convene a formal community infor- mation session with presentations from each organisation followed by a question and answer session. The public can attend one or both sessions. Mr Vickery said it would be an opportunity to hear first-hand information on the topic. "Local Government in the South East is committed to ensuring that the community has access to a range of information on uncon- ventional gas exploration and development," he said. "In particular, it is important for the community to understand the decision making process of the State Government in relation to unconventional gas projects. "The two different sessions are designed to ensure that our community is well informed. "I encourage community members to attend the drop in session in the afternoon to speak one-on-one with the presenters and ask questions. "The evening information session will ensure that community members have another oppor- tunity to access information, but it will not be a forum for making decisions." More details on the information session are available at www.selga.sa.gov.au.
