The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 - 7 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au NEWS 7 OWNERS of classic and vin- tage motorcycles from around Australia roared into the South East over the weekend for the Blue Lake Ariel National Rally. A total of 65 British-made Ariel motorbikes thundered into Millicent for lunch and a tour of the National Trust Living History Museum last Sunday for day three of the national Ariel rally. Rally coordinator Colin Thompson said the riders had labelled the 21st annual South East tour as one of the best ever. "It's been a terrific show and the hospitality that people have provided us has been absolutely fantastic," Mr Thompson said. "A lot of the entrants haven't been to this area of Australia before and being part of a rally is a great way to see the region." The now defunct Ariel brand began production in England in 1908 and was considered one of the leading innovators in motorcycling until the closure of the factory in 1965. An additional 25 classic Triumph, BSA and Czech-made Jawa motorcycles joined the Ariel motorcyclists on the four- day rally of the region. "A lot of these riders have Ariels, but they might be in the restoration process or unable to ride them long distances," Mr Thompson said. "There's a gentleman on the rally that's 78 years old and we have another gentleman who has owned his 1949 model Ariel since new, which is amazing when you think they stopped making the models almost 50 years ago." Riders resumed their tour following a Jubilee Park lunch and museum tour, ending their journey in Mount Gambier on Monday.
