The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 - 11 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au NEWS 11 MILLICENT'S Kimberly-Clark Australia entertained its 117 current and past employees at a dinner recently. It was the fourth year that the Millicent and District Community Club hosted the gathering of the local chapter of the KCA Quarter Century Club. Membership of the club is restricted to present or retired KCA employees who have worked at least 25 years with the company. Millicent Mill manager Scott Whicker invited club members to a tour of the mill to see all the changes that had taken place over the past two years. The tour allowed members to view the new warehouse area where all product is automatically stored and reclaimed when required. AN ANZAC commemoration dawn service will be held in Kalangadoo on Sunday, April 20. Held by the Kalangadoo Remembers committee, it will kick off in the town's cemetery at 6.15am, followed by a gun- fire breakfast at the Riddoch Memorial Institute. For almost a decade, the Kalangadoo community and the Coonawarra Penola RSL have commemorated war service and sacrifice with a commemoration on the Sunday preceding Anzac Day. This year the two servicemen to be remembered are Walter and Luke Rogers from World War I, who enlisted from Kalangadoo. Luke Rogers enlisted on January 22, 1916, and served in the 9th Light Horse regiment in Egypt and Palestine. Walter Rogers enlisted on August 17, 1915, and served on the Western Front. Howard Young of the Anglican Church will lead prayers with Bernie and Gerald Rogers (sons of Luke) and Ian and Ross Rogers (nephews of Walter) laying wreaths on behalf of the family, many of whom still reside in Kalangadoo. Coonawarra Penola RSL president Peter Burford will oversee the arrange- ments. "We are again happy to have the services of bugler John Wright and bagpiper 'Gypsy' Childs," Mr Burford said. "A display of memorabilia will be on show in the institute." KCA club celebrates Kalangadoo continues Anzac tradition Nursing leader raises concerns over service awareness MILLICENT Ladies Probus Club held its annual general meeting recently with outgoing president Mary Van Schaik inducting Maureen Elton in the role. The new executive board comprises vice-president Christine Larsen, past president Mary Van Schaik, secre- tary Joan Lucas and treasurer Ruth Hourigan. In her departing address, Ms Van Schaik fondly recollected her presidency term before thanking fellow Probus members. "This year, I introduced a weekly walk- ing tour for members and I was proud to present the past presidents with the brooches they deserved," she said. "The special event for the year was the 20th anniversary of our club in Millicent and our Probus area representative Margaret Robinson was present to help celebrate." Ms Van Schaik congratulated the new executive appointments and encouraged Probus members to join the committee. "It's very rewarding and it's neces- sary for our club to remain in existence because members are relying on your participation," she said. Probus was initially derived from the expression "professional business" people and aims to advance intellectual and cultural pursuits of retired and semi-retired community members. Member benefits include day trip excursions, luncheons and opportunities to meet like-minded people and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. Formal meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Millicent Bowling Club at 10am. THE head of the nurses union has raised concern over the lack of awareness of a new community midwife service at Millicent and District Hospital. Some residents are unaware a midwife provides home visits to new mothers, according to Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) chief executive Elizabeth Dabars. The service started in February, follow- ing last July's decision by Country Health SA to cease obstetrics services at Millicent. Ms Dabars made the comments after a recent meeting at Millicent involving Country Health SA staff and representa- tives of the ANMF. Ms Dabars said it was heartening that Country Health SA has committed to better promoting the service. "So whilst birthing services themselves are not available at Millicent Hospital at this time, it certainly is open to the local community to have some advice and assistance before the birth of their child and just as importantly some home visits by a midwife following the birth of their child," Ms Dabars said. "The concern is if it's not being used it may well be taken away and lost to the community, so it's really important that women and their families are aware there are some services such as those home visits following the birth of a child."
