The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 - 19 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au 19 SPORT THE Millicent Squash Club has hailed its 2014 Thompson Drilling Junior Skills tournament a huge success with 40 juniors competing in six divisions. Players were represented from Millicent, Adelaide, Naracoorte, and Clare and being a skills event meant they were graded into a division for their ability and not on age. Division 1 was a pool of four with the two best Under 17 boys in the state playing off in the final. Australia's second-ranked Alex Oswald from Adelaide won the match against Sam Haydon 3-0. Tom Pratt performed well against the quality opposition to finish third in front of Naracoorte's Justin Reuter. The Division 2 final was a quality match between Lauren McInerney and Alex Haydon who both have high Australian rankings and recently represented Australia in a test against New Zealand. McInerney is ranked No. 1 in South Australia and second in Australia in the Under 15 girls division while Haydon holds the No. 1 ranking for both for the Under 13 girls. Both hail from Clare and have been com- peting against each other for many years. The older McInerney had the edge the match playing some very impressive squash in front of the large crowd to win 3-0. Division 3 saw local youngster Braeden Ashworth come away with a win on his home court, taking his final 3-1 against Naracoorte's Matt Reuter. Ashworth beat Harry Ashwell from Adelaide and Millicent's Gianni Giurstante, both 3-0 on his way to the final while Reuter downed Teagan Slekenics and Lachlan Mawson. Division 4 was won by Ed Cameron from Adelaide over Harry Schinkel from Naracoorte 3-0 while Antonio Lo lacono from Ingle Farm and Mackenzie Varcoe from Millicent finished third and fourth. The Division 5 final was a great match between a couple of young up and coming players. Jack Lo lacono, aged 10 from Adelaide, was up against the local Jordan Ashworth, aged nine. Lo lacono got the jump early, winning the first game before Ashworth won the second. Lo lacono went on to win the match 3-1 with both playing some impressive shots for their age. Division 6 was won by Millicent's Wil Bowering who has only taken up squash two months ago and was playing in his first tournament. He was able win the final 3-0 over Naracoorte's youngest player Aryan Madan who is only seven years old and has a lot of talent for his age. The event included seven players compet- ing their first tournament - Toby Hartmann, Jemma Hartmann, Wil Bowering, Taylor Allen, Ruben Tully, Ethan Bowman and Gianni Giurastante. PAUL ASHWORTH Four weeks to Millicent Cup IT'S that time of the year to start going through the wardrobe and finding your best clothes for arguably the biggest sporting and social event on the Millicent calendar. Yes, Millicent Cup day for 2014 is on our door- step, just four weeks from this Sunday (May 4 at Penola) to be precise for one of the great days of the Limestone Coast racing season. The Millicent Racing Club committee are already in full swing to make it another highly successful day, and a committee meeting next Monday night will help cross the t's and dot the i's for the first weekend of May. Millicent Racing Club president Keith Sneath -- in his final year at the helm -- is more than keen to depart the chair with everything in perfect order, and promises a great day at Penola. The extremely popular fashion on the fields competitions will again be one of the features of the day, as will the President's luncheon which is acclaimed as the best of its type in this region. "Stakemoney for the eight races this year ($106,500) has been set as the same as last year, and we have been guaranteed the same for 2015. "We have made provisions for more visitors this year, and everything is coming together perfectly," Sneath stated this week. Same in 2015 RACE dates for 2014-15 have been finalised in South Australia, and the Limestone Coast clubs will again have 28 meetings for next season. Thursday race dates have been drastically cut back, which is just as well as a couple of recent Thursday fixtures have bordered on distastrous in terms of attendance and on course betting turnover. Sunday racing is the big winner, with 19 meet- ings scheduled for the sabbath, four on Fridays, three on Thursdays and two Wednesday meetings. Millicent Cup day in 2015 will be on Sunday, May 3 and Mount Gambier (unlike Port Lincoln) has retained its two day cup carnival. Port Lincoln used to be one of the most popular country racing carnivals in Australia but hard times have hit the Eyre Peninsula club. While it seems the Port Lincoln committee were not too fussed about the carnival being reduced to just one day (it was a Wednesday and Friday race day carnival), local business houses (and some club members) are irate as it will mean an enormous loss in revenue to the city for that week. My information is that the main reason given to reduce it to one day was lack of support from owners and trainers (horse numbers) for the first day of the carnival.
