The South Eastern Times : April 1st 2014
Contents
6 - The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, April 1, 2014 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au THERE have been significant movements on the political landscape in recent days which are certain to impact directly on Millicent and district. We now have a former resident who has been promoted in State Cabinet and given the important portfolios of Forests, Fisheries and Agriculture. Leon Bignell spent the first 10 years of his life on the family dairy farm at Glencoe and represents the semi-rural seat of Mawson in the Southern Vales. While a backbencher, Mr Bignell was active in many parts of the state and urged cabinet ministers to allocate time in regional areas. Premier Jay Weatherill and his 'kingmaker', Independent MP and Regional Affairs Minister Geoff Brock have promised this new government will pay particular attention to the regions. As a result, it is a reasonable expectation that portfolio areas like those held by Mr Bignell will get a bigger share of the public purse. Since the March 15 election, the Glencoe area is now represented in State Parliament by senior Liberal Mitch Williams. In the spirit of bipartisanship, Mr Williams should make use of Mr Bignell's Glencoe knowledge. The opposite should also apply as the member for MacKillop has operated a successful mixed farming enterprise for most of his adult life and has a wide knowledge of the issues relating to the region's surface and underground water. The Labor Party has not always had people with a rural or farming background around the table. A notable exception occurred several years ago when the agriculture, fisheries and forests minister was a man who had spent his formative years on a soldier settler property at Greenways midway between Millicent and Kingston. He undertook tertiary studies in agriculture and later worked as a lecturer and primary producer. His name is Rory McEwen and it was under his watch that the process began to sell the harvesting rights to the State Government forests. Let us hope that Mr Weatherill, Mr Brock and Mr Bignell are more attuned to the needs of the regions than selling off government assets to pay for an upgraded Adelaide Oval and another footbridge over the River Torrens. 6 OPINION ROWAN VEHLOW, Southend The atmosphere because the town feels so alive. TYSON MCGRATH, Millicent Listening to music at the Geltwood by Night. LAUREN MUSTILLO, Millicent It's nice to see some colour and art around Millicent. STREET SWEEPER LETTERS TO THE EDITOR What do you enjoy most about the Geltwood Festival? EDITORIAL I HAVE been giving my staff grief over the correct use of the English language. I know I am a language tragic and that missing commas, poor expression and the incorrect use of the apostrophe of ownership draw my eye far more than most. When students get full marks for their weekly spelling tests, they come over to my office to have a pick out of a treasure box. I looked at one spelling test booklet and saw the word mayonnaise spelt with just one "n". I told the initially disappointed student that word was actually incorrectly spelt. Oh dear; so ensued research using the Word program, checking to see if we had a bottle of mayonnaise in the fridge - no; and a phone call to ask a friend to go to their fridge and report back, better still photograph the said bottle, to us. The student was permitted a pick from the box as we figured we all had achieved some learning on this particular word. In fact, he will probably never forget how to spell the word from here on in. Even when I am reading novels, errors will jump off the page at me and I wonder how this can happen through the whole drafting, redrafting, editing and publishing processes. Red underlining does tend togiveyouabitofahintas to whether you have made a mistake and, yes, you do have to ensure that your spell checker is defaulted to Australian English, as opposed to U.S. English. However, having been through the book publishing experience, I do know that after some time in the redrafting process, you can lose focus on what you intended and what eventuates. I simply cannot use texting abbreviations. They go far too far against the grain for this tragic. THE Compton CFS Brigade - formerly known as Gambier West - will hold its 75 year anniversary in December. We are seeking any information that you may have - history, photographs or funny tales from the EFS/CFS that we could use on our special day. It would be greatly appreciated. Please send information to Jennifer Newlyn at 044 882 4312 or jnewlyn1@optusnet.com.au or Assunta Toop at 0431 031 019 or assunta@live. com.au Thank you. Compton CFS Brigade MAY one ask Mr Gandolfi if he supports the idea of the South Australian Government installing an intensive care unit at the Mount Gambier Hospital. When heart attacks occur in Mount Gambier, one has to have arranged aircraft transport to Adelaide. Bear in mind the time factor for transporting a patient to Adelaide. Time is very critical, although the staff on board do their very best. Mount Gambier, being South Australia's second largest city, deserves not only an MRI, but an intensive care unit.
