22 - The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, April 1, 2014 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au 22 SPORT SECOND year Millicent coach, Andrew Robinson has finally seen what his team is capable of. After "winning" their first ever Western Border Football League wooden spoon in 2013 and reports of a severe player shortage, the Saints came out swinging in the ninth annual Elastoplast Cup on Saturday. The day long football carni- val was hosted by Millicent at McLaughlin Park and along with the six member WBFL clubs, the competition also included Kowree-Naracootre- Tatiara Football League invitee, Naracoorte. Each team was offered two qualifying games in a bid to reach the grand final and Millicent did the township proud in defeating, firstly East Gambier and then South Gambier. In the grand final however, the Saints came up short against a slick looking West Gambier, losing by one straight kick! Game 1: Millicent 5.3 (39) d East Gambier 3.1 (19) THE Saints were quick out of the blocks against a sluggish East Gambier line-up and raced to a four goal lead before the Bulldogs had even ventured forward. The second half saw East stage somewhat of a mini fightback but there had certainly been plenty of damage done early. Anthony Wilson, Matt McCallum and Toby Case all managed second half goals to add some respectability to East's scoreline, but at the other end, the Saints were just as good and goals from Garry Abdulla and Jonah Grimes ensured the home side started the carnival with a solid win. Hamish Nitschke, Jackson Reilly and Callan Hobbs were impressive for Millicent in its 20 point win. Game 2: West Gambier 13.4 (82) d Casterton/Sandford 3.4 (22). Game 3: Naracoorte 7.3 (45) d North Gambier 3.6 (24). Game 4: Millicent 9.3 (57) d South Gambier 7.3 45) MILLICENT had no shortage of stars in its second outing for the day, in particular, Tyson Lindsay, Mitchell Gordon, Cameron Haggett, Garry Abdulla and Jayden Reilly. Although South started with the first two goals, Millicent were able to recover and by half time had turned its deficit into a six point lead. Garry Abdulla and Cameron Haggett were able to provide plenty of bulk and height respec- tively and with the runners, Nat Robbins, Hamish Nitschke, Jayden Reilly and Callan Hobbs doing their bit further afield, the Saints were able to outscore South in the run home to win by 12 points. Game 5: West Gambier 8.3 (51) d East Gambier 1.0 (6). Game 6: North Gambier 14.5 (89) d Casterton/Sandford 0.0 (0). Game 7: South Gambier 7.5 (47) d Naracoorte 2.0 (12). Final ladder Pos. Pts % 1 West Gambier 8 475.00 2 Millicent 7 150.00 3 North Gambier 4 251.11 4 South Gambier 4 133.33 5 Naracoorte 4 80.28 6 East Gambier 1 27.77 7 Casterton/Sand. 0 12.86 Grand fnal: West Gambier 5.2 (32) d Millicent 4.2 (26) BOTH teams were well rested for the grand final with Millicent having a 2½ hour wait and West, a 90 minute break between games. Although West started the final with an early behind, Millicent kicked into gear with goals from Jayden Reilly and Jeremy Hales. But West then produced a two minute spell that delivered three goals via Allan Kennedy, Chris Wehl and Tom Holmes to give the Roos a seven point half time lead. In hindsight that burst could have well have been the deciding moment of the grand final. Further goals in the first few minutes of the second half from Tom Holmes and Steven Wenman pushed the margin out to 19 points but could come at a cost as Wenman limped off the ground with what looked to be a thigh injury. The Saints weren't to be denied completely and closed the game out with goals from Callan Hobbs and Garry Abdulla before time beat them. Prior to Saturday, West Gambier had only ever won four Elastoplast Cup matches in eight years and they had come in four different seasons, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011. That tally has now been extended to seven and West can find room in its trophy cabinet for its first ever Elastoplast Cup. BREAKING THE LINES: Tyson Lindsay evades South Gambier's Dion Stratford and Zain King. HISTORY REVISITED: Hamish Nitschke, son of club legend, Andrew weaves around South Gambier opponent. Zain King. Saints point to improved season ON THE RUN: Millicent ruckman Cameron Haggett sprints away from South Gambier's Scott Fleming.
