Jack Irish, the ex-lawyer turned private eye and debt collector created by award-winning crime author Peter Temple, has enjoyed a pretty good transition in that respect, with two of Irish’s adven- tures, Black Tide and Bad Debts, being adapted into acclaimed telemovies by the ABC. Still, there were a few admirers Jack’s back to make a point World-weary private eye Jack Irish is back on Melbourne’s mean streets in the ABC telemovie Dead Point. (CC) of the character a little dissatis- fied with the decision to cast Guy Pearce as Irish. “I’ve been reminded by some pretty die-hard fans out there that I’m not Jack Irish,” he smiled. “But I’ve had some die-hard fans acknowledge that while this Jack Irish is different from the character in the books, it still works for them.” Frankly, it’s hard to see why anyone would take issue with the casting of Pearce. He may be a little younger than Temple’s ver- sion – “I think Jack in the books is more of that old-school detective- story sort of character,” said the actor – but he conveys a wry wit, a solid moral code and a world- weariness that makes him a com- pelling hero. After the critical and commer- cial success of the first two Jack Irish telemovies, Jack is back in Dead Point, a new mystery that sees the Melbourne investiga- tor enmeshed in a case involving blackmail, drug-smuggling, cor- ruption and murder. Familiar faces such as Marta Dusseldorp (as Jack’s lover, jour- nalist Linda Hillier) and Shane Jacobson (as Jack’s police contact, Barry Tregear) have returned, and this time they’re joined by the likes of Vince Colosimo, Kat Stewart, John Jarratt and Barry Humphries. It’s an intriguing rogues’ gallery Jack finds himself tangling with and it makes for an engrossing tale, but just as interesting as Jack as a character. Years after the murder of his young wife by an unhinged client, Jack is finally making his way back to life – albeit slowly and gingerly – and it’s something that gives Dead Point some emotional impact. “Jack coming off the bender he might have been on in the years leading up to the first two films meant you got a very particular version of the character,” Pearce said. “Now he has his wits about him a bit more, and while I think ‘death wish’ might be too heavy-handed a term he doesn’t have that kind of feeling as much. His feet are back on the ground, and he’s allowing himself to feel a bit.” Still, despite his compas- sion and connection with other characters, Jack is still carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders somewhat. It’s some- thing about the character Pearce responds to. “I like that he never really lets go of anything,” he said. “He doesn’t get too heavy about things – he’s got a nice sense of irony and a sense of humour about the situa- tions he finds himself in – but he’s also not flippant. Jack acknowl- edges the severity of what’s hap- pening but he’s also capable of laughing about it to himself. “Jack will always have issues – he’s optimistic but a bit misguided as well – but, it’s always interesting how he continues to work through them.” Getting a handle on Jack’s psy- chology and emotional life was relatively easy for Pearce, but the actor admits he struggled in the early stages with the “enormity and complexity” of the character’s world, especially when filming Black Tide and Bad Debts simulta- neously. “I’d done a couple of jobs the year I agreed to do this, but eve- rything about Jack Irish just said ‘yes’ to me,” he said. “When I turned up on the first day for a script reading, it really dawned on me how complex his world and his relationships were. And then we’d be filming scenes from Black Tide in the morning and Bad Debts in the afternoon! “It was fortunate that Jack still had a bit of a deer-in-the-head- lights quality at that stage, that he was coming off some bleary, drunken bender he’d been on since the death of his wife. But we wanted to make sure when we got into Dead Point that there were echoes of that but that it didn’t disable him.” It seems Pearce has rarely stopped working since his break- out role in Neighbours, whether it’s internationally on miniseries like Mildred Pierce and blockbust- ers like Iron Man 3 or locally on films like Animal Kingdom and the upcoming drama The Rover (co- starring Robert Pattinson). And with one more Jack Irish novel – White Dog – left unfilmed, there’s every chance the character will make an encore appearance in the future. “There are certainly discus- sions about it,” Pearce revealed. “And I’ll get involved in those dis- cussions whenever they want me to.” Jack Irish: Dead Point, Sunday, 8.30pm on ABC1. Pearce: “He has his wits about him a bit more ... His feet are back on the ground, and he’s allowing himself to feel a bit.”
