32 - The South Eastern Times, Thursday, April 10, 2014 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au 32 SPORT From page 34 With ample room under the player transfer points and a further 71 days until the cessation of all clearances on June 30, will the Eagles enter the market for additional players? It must be a tempt- ing thought for the club’s hierarchy given that the club has never been able to defend any of its four previous premierships. In a shorter his- tory in the MSEFL, Kongorong has won just three flags but two of those were in succession in 1980 and 1981. The Hawks will approach this match with a healthy amount of optimism given they would have had a fortnight’s break and their opponents will be nursing injured bodies and injured pride after a lacklustre loss at Tantanoola. It is to be expected that the reigning premiers will not yet have the same air of invincibility as 2013 as more than a third of the grand final side is missing. Some Eagles will return to the nest in 2014, others are doubtful while some have definitely moved out. Due to the timing of their scheduled bye and a league- wide break for Easter, Hatherleigh players will have a three week break from the playing arena. I am tipping an upset result as I think the Hawks have the firepower to exploit the Eagles while they are at a low ebb. If the likes of the Phillips brothers and Josh Wright hit their straps, the visitors will win this battle of the birds. Kalangadoo v Nangwarry IT has been almost five years since Kalangadoo players found themselves in a top two placing. The last occasion was in 2009 when the Magpies went within a whisker of winning the 2009 grand final against Mount Burr at Hatherleigh. The Magpies are in their current position due to sound wins over Glencoe (home) and Robe (away) and could claim to spot by 5pm on Saturday if they achieve a big vic- tory over the luckless Nangwarry. Due to a cruel pro- gramming decision, the Saints have faced the 2013 grand final- ists to commence this season and now find themselves in the unwanted, but famil- iar, position at the foot of the premiership table. Despite the short 11km trip to Kalangadoo, the visitors face an Everest-like task to lower the colours of the home team which is growing in confi- dence week-by-week. The Saints will be without past coach and Mail Medallist Brett Lindner due to a troublesome knee while new coach Simon Merrett was suspended by the MSEFL tribunal at its meeting in Millicent on Tuesday night. Merrett had been red-carded and reported for using abusive language towards field umpire Chris Scott. A third consecutive win for Kalangadoo is on the cards. Port MacDonnell v Tantanoola DESPITE their unbeaten status, neither the Demons nor the Tigers can be regarded as being in cherry ripe form. Newcomers, the pres- ence of colts, injuries and lack of match time might explain why these two teams have yet to produce the kind of consistency sought by respective coaches Jason Dawe and James McGregor. Their teams have played patches of good footy as well as ordi- nary spells. The loser of Saturday’s match is likely to be relegated to third place on the MSEFL premiership table. One of Tantanoola’s participants on Saturday has knowl- edge of this venue which would hardly be matched by any of the Demons. Dawe spent many seasons as a player and coach of the seasiders and it is doubtful that any of his contemporar- ies in a red-and-blue guernsey exceeded his tally of goals or Mail Medal votes. It is quite a few years since he has been involved at the Bay but the red carpet, of sorts, will be rolled out for him. Plenty of his former teammates would be happy to shout him a drink after the match but they would be hoping they would be toasting a victory for the home team. Too many Tigers flashed in and out of the play in that win over Hatherleigh and that does not inspire much confidence. The Tigers could have up to three players back in their line-up in the coming weeks. New assistant coach Martin Coote is about to complete his grape harvesting commit- ments, former league goalkicking winner Kim Dodd is return- ing from overseas and some in the club have not given up hope on a key player returning from Adelaide. With Dylan Bromley and Will Macdonald in good touch, the home team will start favour- ites. TIGER HUNT: Tantanoola’s Raegan Clarke. MISTING rain and cold, blustery winds couldn’t keep 40 men and women bowlers from celebrating the annual Millicent Bowling Club’s Patrons’ Day with the winners decided by percentages after a tie was the result of the two games over 10 ends. Peter Hyland, Alan Strother, Arnold Damhuis and Herb Henderson on 54+14 took first place with 73.3pc, while Alan Correll, Maureen Elton, Clive Stevens and Peter Scanlon finished in second place with 70.5pc. Third place went to Paul Ryan, Merle Stevens, Peter Varcoe and Judy Saint with 52+5. The afternoon began when president Derk Pietersma thanked all the club’s patrons for their dedicated service to the club over many years – Mesdames D. Chapman, H. Skeer, P. Campbell, B. Sargeant, S. Buhlmann and E. Scudds and Misters M. Skeer, H. Henderson, J. Edgcumbe, C. Stevens, J. van Schaik and A. Stanley.
