15 2014 WESTERN BORDER FOOTBALL/NETBALL PREVIEW Netball PLENTY of new faces at Blue Lake Sports Park with Nicole Butler returning after having her second child. Malinda Markiewicz has made the switch from East Gambier and Megan Hein is looking to test herself in Western Border company after learning her trade at Kongorong. Butler gives the Demons a great pinch hitter who can play any position on the court and has plenty of experience despite being only in her early 20s, while Markiewicz is a strong player who finishes accurately and gives the Demons a long range shooting option. Hein is just a teenager but is athletic and smart and early signs are she will be a great asset in the mid court. With 2013 WBNA Team-of-the- Year representatives, Chantelle Weir (goal attack) and Alyce Mourbey (goal defence) holding down the key posts and Alyssa Boylan and Lisa King still part of the line-up, South boasts a good blend of youth and experience and plenty of flexibility. Finding team chemistry will no doubt take a while with different faces across every line but if this group can get it together, they could well test most opponents. The Demons used Megan Lawler and Gemma Currie in the Elastoplast Cup and both of those junior representatives looked at home in senior company and should get their chances in 2014. Meanwhile Casterton recruit, Liza Mutch, who has relocated to Mount Gambier, is another of the Demons teenage brigade set to impress. Last season’s debutante, Yazmin King has a knee injury to overcome but when fit will add yet another defensive option for South. TOUGH IN THE CLINCHES: Alyce Mourbey of the South Gambier Demons. Demons unveil plethora of new faces DASHING DEMON: South Gambier’s Chantelle Weir. A SOMEWHAT surprise grand finalist in 2013, West Gambier will again be looking to challenge for the premier- ship under the guidance of returning coach Amy Cram. It was no coincidence that West’s late season resurgence came as playing coach Cram returned to the court after having her first child. And with her sister, Lisa in career best form at the other end of the court in the shoot- ing circle, the Kangaroos are always a dangerous proposi- tion. The return of Kahli Rolton to the shooting circle only adds to the scoring power of the Roos as she is a tough assignment for any defender with her abil- ity to hold strongly and finish accurately. Rolton and Cram combined well in 2012 when first paired together and the ability of the strong holding Rolton and the sharp shooting and creative Cram will have many defen- sive combinations already having sleepless nights. Defensively the Roos have plenty of depth to partner with Cram, namely teenagers, Mollie Muhovics and Maddy Teakle, along with Rachael Langford (nee Wilson) and specialist wing defender and 2013 grand final Most Valuable Player award winner, Carly Trevilyan. But covering the loss of Brittany McEvoy from the mid court will be tough to cover. Carlee Davey and Tahlia Earl will certainly be asked to fill mid court roles, with Gemma Davey and Amy Bignell set to return later in the season. West out to improve on last season STAR ROO: West Gambier’s Sammi Cummins. KEEP ON RUNNING: West Gambier’s Jess Kipping keeps the Tigers on the move.
