CHILD CARE CENTRE COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS The Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre provides an environment for children to interact, explore, play, create and develop their capacity for learning. The Centre operates as a non-profi t service to the Wattle Range area and prides itself in establishing and maintaining strong connections with families, local businesses and other professionals. In developing and maintaining connections within our community we aim to regularly engage children in excursions and visitors to the Centre. These events are considered an integral part of children’s learning, providing opportunity for developing a sense of belonging and identity as a citizen within our community. Currently the Centre collaborates with both the Kindergartens, Learning Together Centre, High School, Library, Celia Hart Court, Sheoak Lodge and each of the primary schools, engaging in joint excursions, professional learning, performances, gardening, art/ craft experiences, singing and dancing. Children also visit local businesses such as the post offi ce, supermarkets and gardening centres; to post letters to Santa, purchase items for cooking and gardening. The Centre participates in excursions to Lake McIntyre to explore the natural habitat and check on how well the trees are growing (planted with Council members in mid 2013). Local resident Joycelin Walker regularly attends the Centre to play the piano for children to sing and perform. The children also utilise resources donated from local businesses such as Mitre 10, Mayura Products, Millicent Florist, Toy Kingdom and more. Gladys Smith ELC welcomes any community member with trade, craft, music, gardening, sporting skills to participate in children’s learning opportunities, along with opportunities to collaborate and engage in local community projects and organisations. Please contact Centre Co-Directors Clara Walker or Sarah Murby for more information on 08 8733 3030. WORKS IN BRIEF AFTER HOURS CONTACT SERVICE DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN CONTACT COUNCIL 24/7? In the current fi nancial year 2013/14 Council has committed over $1.5M to grading works and a further $580K on gravel road resheeting which is the addition of gravel material to unsealed roads. This may sound signifi cant however this is for the care and management of 1,945km of unsealed roads. Council practices are always being reviewed to get the most out of the equipment and material available. An example of this is the sourcing of material for resheeting with Council continuing the practice of talking to local property owners about the opportunity to source appropriate gravels for the resheeting of unsealed roads. Another practice being reviewed is the reshaping of roads to ensure water does not pond and result in potholes. Council’s grader operators, when possible, will be crowning roads to ensure that adequate cross-fall is in place to direct water into the table drain. We anticipate that a number of these practices will allow for more works being completed and an improvement in the condition of the unsealed road network. It is expected that these projects should be fully completed by June 2014. GET YOUR TICKETS TO THE HOTTEST SHOW IN TOWN Have you got your tickets to this year’s Mayoral Cabaret?
