Jack Altschwager, who is a member of the Adelaide University Boat Club, will take part in the Australian National Rowing Championships Rowing Regatta in Sydney. The 19-year-old is not a member of a local club and therefore did not meet the criteria and purpose of the council’s youth development foundation. However, councillors decided to approve his application since there was no local rowing club in the region. In his application for a grant, Mr Altschwager said he started rowing as a sport when he was at school in Adelaide in 2010. He now trains eight times per week, starting sessions at 5.30am five days a week at the West Lakes rowing course. “My short-term goal is to be a part of the men’s under 21 Australian rowing team that will compete against New Zealand in August,” Mr Altschwager said. “By attending the interstate regatta, it gives me the possible chance of having my talents noticed in order to gain selection. “From here, I wish to continue my rowing and see where it takes me as I begin to head towards the elite level.” 644724 ADHS0007 2/14 Come and find some Easter treats!
