Mr Sneath, along with his committee, are understandably excited about the forthcoming Millicent Cup meeting at Penola on Sunday, May 4. “Everything is falling into place nicely and all we need is good weather and the support of the Millicent and district community,” he stated earlier this week. There should be no problems with the latter, as Millicent Cup day is already a keen talking point around the district for what will be another great day on the local sporting calendar. The build up to the big day actually starts next week with a cocktail party at the Grand Hotel on Wednesday, April 23 from 7pm where participants in the MRC’s 500 Club will be on hand to see the draw to determine which business houses get race naming rights on May 4. Then it’s back to the Grand Hotel nine days later for the traditional calcutta night on Friday, May 2 which will get under way at around 8.30pm. For a calcutta ticket ($2.50 each and available from any committee person or the Grand Hotel) you could end up a couple of thousand dollars better off after the Millicent Cup. our doors open worlds Support Workers We need everyone’s help to buy aircraft and keep the ROYAL FLYING DOCTORflying. Players will take on the annual Pacific Rim Championships to be held in New Zealand over the Easter weekend as part of the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup teams. Under 15 player Matthew Black of Naracoorte and Under 17’s Olivia Fuller of Millicent along with Brenna McKay and Tenille Gray, both of Mount Gambier will be part of the teams along with former junior Lakers Michael and Mitchell Harris. Following the successful 2013 tour, Under 15 and Under 17 boys and girls teams were selected and named at the conclusion of the 2014 Country Cup in January. The teams will play in the elite divisions of the tournament. The Pacific Rim Championships will be played from April 18-21 in Tauranga in a new nine court stadium and will include over 100 teams. www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au WOMEN’S CHAMPION: Vice-president Ella Pietersma (left) congratulates Millicent women’s singles handicap winner Carlene Godden (right) with runner-up Barbara Schuller. Those wanting to head to the Millicent Cup but do not want to drive can catch any of the buses heading to Penola for the day. Buses will run from Beachport and Millicent hotels and bookings can be made at your local watering hole. Oakbank here they come IT’S been 25 years since local owner/ trainer Ian “Ned” Walker headed to the Adelaide hills to take in the Oakbank Easter Carnival. the Walker clan and a large support crew head off for what will be a working, relaxing and –no doubt – a socialising five days. “I want a bit of a break and we decided to have Easter camping near the Oakbank racecourse,” Walker said. EASTER DATE: The Ian “Ned” Walker trained, Lionhearted Girl is booked to race at Oakbank on Easter Monday. “Four or five campervans and about 20 people leave on Friday.” The last time Walker was at Oakbank was to put the saddle on Prince Of Diamonds in a hurdle when ridden by John MacMillan in the late 1980’s. “He ran third and should nearly have won,” was Walker’s vivid recollection of the day. The Walker stable will have two runners on Easter Saturday, Ace Or Joka in a 1400 metre handicap at Oakbank and On The Rebound in a 0-58 handicap up the road at Clare. For the first time, the Clare meeting will have TAB status, so how will the Walker stable handle having two runners at two different locations? “Josh (Bromley) will head to Clare and I will stay at Oakbank,” Walker explained. “Fortunately, we have the horses sta- bled within a three minute walk of the Oakbank track.” On Easter Monday, Lionhearted Girl (1050 metre sprint) and Lead The Witness (1400 metre handicap) will fly the flag for the Walker establishment – and Millicent – at Oakbank. But all that will change tomorrow when Red Centre winner IT was another weekend spent in the heart of Australia for Millicent jockey Paul Marks. The Alice Springs Racing Club are gearing up for its cup carnival and Marks had an easy 3.5 length win in the 1100 metre 0-66 handicap there on Saturday. That was aboard Miss Written ($6) for local trainer Kath North. Mount Gambier born apprentice, Samantha Rowley is now based in the Northern Territory and has been seen wielding the whip at both Darwin and Alice Springs of late. Penola Cup Sunday ONCE again, the Penola Racing Club are having a big, family fun day as part of its Penola Cup meeting this Sunday. It has proven to be a winning formula for a decade now with a big crowd packing the course each Easter. Plenty for the youngsters on Sunday (all free) with an Easter egg hunt, a visit from the Easter bunny, kid’s races on the track plus a jumping castle and face paintings. No better place for a relaxing Easter Sunday than on the lawns at Penola. Just over 100 nominations were received for the eight race card which will see the return to racing of the top performer Evenmoreaction in the $18,000 Penola Cup. Evenmoreaction has not raced since a stirring victory in the Mount Gambier Summer Cup in January and has been allocated a whopping 64.5 kilograms for the Penola Cup. Godden claims handicap singles title CARLENE Godden has claimed the Millicent Bowling Club’s women’s handicap singles grand final with a strong win over Barbara Schuller. After two-shot advantage to begin the competition Godden dominated the match to take the title. But she didn’t have an easy run through the finals series with a tight two-shot victory to advance the grand final. Godden faced Mary Campbell in the semi-final in a high standard and entertaining game. Campbell took a two-shot advantage on handicap to start the match but Godden worked to take the lead. But Campbell fought back, winning five ends to hold a slender 22-19 advantage. Godden again lifted to take the remaining three ends and book a berth in the grand final with a 24-22 victory. Schuller also faced a tough hit out to make the grand final, taking a one-shot win over Judy Lowe in the semifinal. Lowe began with a four-shot advantage and it took 12 ends for Schuller to draw ahead. From there the intensity rose with a tight 23-22 result. 645717
