ADVERTISING FEATURE 3 Aussie ‘Treasure Trove’ at Shannons May 5 Melbourne Autumn Auction A TRIO of locally-built Ford Fairlanes will excite Ford collectors and devotees of Australia’s favourite prestige car alike when they go under the hammer at Shannons Melbourne Autumn Classic auction on Monday, May 5. The Fairlanes – a 1964 model 289 V8 Compact ($8,000-$12,000), a 1968 289 V8-engined ZA sedan ($9,000-$12,000) and a 1976 ZH 500 302 V8 ($7,000$10,000), head a treasure trove of nine classic Australian cars from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s in the auction. Four of the cars – including the 1964 and 1976 Fairlanes, a very desirable 1967 Holden HR Premier ($10,000-$15,000) and a ‘Brock Replica’ 1985 Holden VK Commodore ($6,000-$10,000) – are being offered with ‘no reserve’. The pick of the Aussie cars is a substantially unmodified 1974 Holden LH Torana SL/R 5000 sedan presented in the great period colour combination of Sunburst Gold Metallic with Black vinyl interior. This rare survivor of Holden’s great 1970s Aussie Muscle Car era was previously owned by a West Australian collector before coming into the present owner's hands. The very tidy SL/R 5000 has been used sparingly in recent years and presents as a substantially unmodified example other than a few bolt-on performance parts. It is being sold with a verification letter from Holden and is expected to sell in the $46,000-$54,000 range because of its provenance and largely original condition. Two rare one-owner HQ Holdens are also to excite collectors in the auction. The first is a very original, unmolested 1971 LS Monaro 253 V8 Coupe offered in lovely condition throughout, while the other is a well-presented 1972 Holden HQ Premier 308 V8 Station Wagon. The ‘time warp’ Monaro has lived in Northern Victoria all its life with no notable modifications other than its conversion to LP Gas carried out in 1982. The car has avoided all the usual ‘street machine’ modifications over the years and even retains its original hubcaps and vinyl roof. Shannons expect keen bidding in for the Monaro in the $20,000-$25,000 range and for the Premier Station Wagon to sell for $10,000-$14,000. The other Holden in the auction is a 1972 Holden HQ 'Modified' 402-cid V8 Utility that Shannons expect to sell for $15,000-$20,000.
