Jam session gives stage for emerging musicians South East talents experience public performance MUSTILLO RAQUEL journo1@setimes.com.au SOUTH East musicians ed the makeshift stage at Bompas Asian House to raise their voice at the sea view cafe’s monthly jam session. The event celebrated its first birthday on Sunday, April 27, with over 20 performers hitting their perfect pitch to a music-loving crowd. Identifying a lack of performance opportunities in the region, event coordinator Terry Sutherland devised the jam session to fill the musical void in the region. “There’s a lot of people in the area particularly through summer and we were keen to take the idea of the long running jam session to the next level,” he said. “A few of us have been jamming for a long time and we wanted to have something regular going for not only us, but for newer performers.” From rock and roll to blues, Mr Sutherland said the variety of performers catered to all tastes. “We’ll have a solo artist get up and do a couple of acoustic songs or a band might come along and jam a few songs and you’ll get someone join them as well,” he said. “It’s great to see the regu- N ALL WINE~ OFF IN ANY 6 OR MORE BOTTLE BUY Taylors Estate Clare Valley Shiraz 750ml Tooheys Extra Dry Bottles 6x345ml, Grolsch, Tsingtao OR Tiger Bottles 6x330ml Equates to $31.50 for 700ml 30% 13 $ each SAVE $699 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au 4 $ 42 MIX & MATCH $ 2 90 SAVE $22 Smirnof Red Label Vodka, Jim Beam White Label Bourbon OR Bundaberg UP Rum 1 Litre lars come along and hear how they improve and build their confidence from playing in front of an audience.” Performers of all genres are encouraged to kick up the jam as all equipment is provided and additional incentives include meal and drink vouchers to use during the event. “We get musos that come from around the area and even Adelaide and in summer we get tourists from all over who get up and have a crack,” he said. “Bompas is a great venue, there’s a very good quality sound and the atmosphere is always really good, it’s just a cool vibe and everything flows well.” Bompas owner Sarah Barnett said the jam session had been well received by tuned tourists and melody makers alike. “We get wonderful feed- back from everyone who comes along to the session and the performers really like playing to the crowd too,” she said. “It’s a good chance for young people to perform and build their live performance skills and we’re happy that we have the opportunity to provide the stage.” The jam sessions are held at Bompas on the last Sunday of every month with the next session scheduled for 3pm on Sunday, May 25.
