SPORT 33 United draw Millicent equal to Apollo challenge Millicent 3 drew Apollo 3 MILLICENT and Apollo have battled out a classic match in Round 2 of the Western Border Soccer Association season. Millicent hosted the match in dry, sunny conditions and was off to a good start with captain Dave Leyden winning the toss. With some players still unavailable for the home side Jarrod Mustillo, who would bolster the defensive mid field, was a welcome inclusion. Apollo was immediately into action, with a goal in the the second minute as the ball was cut back to the centre for the unmarked forward for an easy score. Millicent was forced to make its first substitution just three minutes in, bringing Drew Agnew on for the injured Winston Pioro who had to be assisted from the ground. The home side was then able to score after a well-placed free kick found Cam Saint right at the back post and resulted in an easy conversion for the equaliser. Millicent scored its second at the eighth minute after a well-placed ball pushed through the Apollo defence and Saint was left with just the keeper to beat to go one goal up. The intensity lifted from therre with both teams counter attacking, making for end to end football and plenty of excitement for the home crowd. Millicent scored its third at the 20th minute after the centre referee awarded a penalty to the home side as the result of Saint being bought down in the penalty area. Brett Dibley stepped up, and as he has proven many times, was able to convert easily. The remaining first half was a tight tussle as Apollo mounted attack after attack, only to be repelled by the tight Millicent defence and then forced to defend the Millicent counter attack. Half time saw Apollo’s coach Derek Fergusson giving his players a good old fashioned spray that could be heard across the ground while Millicent’s coach Phill Thrussell was calm. Thrussell was full of praise for his players and their work rate, but noted they had to lift to the intensity of the first 20 minutes, particularly the midfield, as the opposition had begun to take control. The defensive four at the back had been moving the ball well out of defence and the resulting counter attacks had looked dangerous for the opposition. He asked that they make the most of their opportunity’s, noting the shots that had been sprayed or taken when there were better options. The second half began and as expected Millicent was forced to defend almost immediately as a fired up Apollo came out hard. At the 61st minute Apollo was awarded a penalty and it was a nervous home crowd that watched on, only to break out into cheers as Millicent’s keeper Steve Hughes was able to deny Apollo the goal. Apollo was able to finally score its second for the match at the 66th minute, making for a tight game. The intensity had lifted and Millicent was being forced to defend deep into its end of the ground, but it was able to stand firm and still able to win the ball and mount counter attacks. The referee was forced to hand www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au several cards for the match including a red to a Millicent player, leaving the team with one man down. Apollo was finally able to score the equaliser at the 90th minute as the result of a free kick. Millicent was then forced to defend as the last two minutes of the match were played out, hanging on to share the points. This Sunday Millicent will host Gambier City Sharks in Round 3 and will be hoping for some key players to be available to further bolster the senior side.
