SPORT 35 Hunt riders set high standard DUE to Mother’s Day, this week’s Penola Hunt Club hunt was held on Saturday, forcing riders to make a choice between which sport to attend. Some opted for the other, causing numbers to be down, but those who ventured out to hunt were very glad they did. On the properties of Stuart and Jim Child’s (Jacondah) and Jim, Melinda, Kingsley and Margaret Moore (Moorview), Jo O’Connor thought she could not top last weekend’s hunt with I Am Sam jumping many jumps she had never thought she would. A welcome back to the hunt was Libby Halliday and her ever reliable Cee Jay who was invited to come up to ride second horse and be the deputy for the day. Also back in saddle after having time off to have a baby was Krystal Merchant on her horse Bubba. Bec Burns was another person having her first hunt for the season on Ransom who is owned by Jen Barnard, who opted to ride her other horse, Fly. “Blue” Barnard rode his second horse out in as many hunts in Straight As. Other riders were Andrew and Elaine Smith, Jane Lucas, Belinda Seaman, Anne Louise Stranddorf, Jenna Bignell, Heidi Sutherland and Lisa Sanders. Next week’s hunt will be held at Exmoor (Dergholm) starting at 11am SA time. Riders are asked to wear formal attire to mark the 20th anniversary of hunting on Exmoor. “We do Exmoor” will be a camp at Lionel’s Log with shared camp ovens for tea while for lunch on Sunday there will be a ride into the “Pub in the Scrub” for a feast on pizzas! Those planning to attend Exmoor are asked to advise the committee to assist with catering. IN SYNC: Krystal Merchant and Jenna Bignell clear a small jump together. There were some changes to the side with Jarrod Mustillo and Brad Gardenier both unavailable and paving the way for Josh Reiman, Brett McGrath and Drew Agnew to come into the Millicent squad. Conditions were dry and sunny with just a slight breeze. A pumped-up Millicent were forced to take stock as the Sharks opened the scoring in just the third minute through Craig Wright. At the 33rd minute, Millicent were finally able to score the equaliser after Matt Grgetic was able to find some space on the left wing and run through the Sharks defence and slot the ball home. The Sharks had an opportunity to score a second 40 minutes in after the referee awarded a free kick after an infringement in the penalty area. But Millicent’s goalkeeper, Steve Hughes was able to pick the direction of the kick and pull off another great save for his team for the second week running. At half time, Millicent’s coach Phill Thrussell asked his players to honour the midfield leads that were being created through Brett Dibley, Matt Grgetic and Cameron Saint. The Sharks had allowed these players time and space but the ball was not finding them. Thrussell asked his defenders to push forward quicker and not stretch out the midfield, noting that the work being done by the wide running players in Josh Reiman and Joseph Petraccarro was creating scoring opportunities. Millicent was then forced to defend hard as Sharks mounted continued attacks. Shortly after, Millicent made its first substitution, swapping Brett McGrath for Tau Tsephe. Millicent were still mounting its own attacks through its midfield and were able to again level the scores in the 65th minute after Brett Dibley found the net. Five minutes later, Millicent made another chance with Josh Reiman off for Tom Errington. Both sides lifted their intensity and every turnover caused pressure at either end of the ground. Sharks finally broke the deadlock 88 minutes into the game when Sar Moo scored what would prove to be the winning goal.
