16 NEWS School web of intrigue Spiders spark impromptu science lesson TANTANOOLA Primary School students were puzzled by the strange, white and furry appearance of their football oval on arriving at school last week. At first glance, the grass appeared to be covered in frost. But, a closer inspection revealed the oval was covered in spider webs criss-crossing its length and breadth. The children pondered on how so much webbing could be spun in just one night. “There’s quadrillions of them,” Year 3 student Toby Jazepcyzk said. They scooped plastic containers across the surface and discovered tiny spiders. Looking down at their shoes, students also found that they were covered in the webbing and grass. On closer inspection of the blades of grass, tiny spider eggs could be seen. With some research, stu- dents learnt that the spiders are from the Linyphiidae family of arachnids, commonly known as sheet weavers. As the school day progressed, some of the spider eggs began to hatch. Students were intrigued throughout the day by the impromptu outdoor science lesson. The children decided there must have been a lot of tiny spiders to spin so much web in one night. OUTDOOR LEARNING: Sheet weavers were responsible for the countless webs and eggs on the lawns of the school, leading to students learning about nature outside the classroom. WOVEN LAWNS: The Tantanoola Primary School’s football oval was covered in millions of spider webs last week.
