1 NEWS8 Teens steered in right direction Interactive safety program highlights hazards on road for young drivers BLA AN nelia ACKIE ANELIA anelia@tbw.com.au YOUNG drivers are in for the ride of their lives during a road safety awareness program with practical lessons. Year 11 students from across the lower South East will be put behind the steering wheel to experience vehicle braking distances at different speeds. The interactive experience will be part of the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program (RYDA) in Mount Gambier in September. RYDA will also familiarise the young drivers with road hazards, distractions and risks such as alcohol, drugs and fatigue. A crash survivor will deliver a fi rst-hand account, while vehicle safety, maintenance and insurance will also be discussed. Getting behind the wheel of a car as a young driver is said to be the most dangerous situation in the average person’s ife. As a teacher, Mount Gambier RYDA committee chair David Burt has seen too many young drivers impacted by road crashes. “Many of these accidents TV GUIDE I Thursday July 3 I SEVEN Sa TEN Sa 6.00 Sunrise. Mr Burt hopes for schools to support the event that is designed to complement the school curriculum and government road safety messages. For more information contact David Burt on 8723 0121 or 0458 589 532. LIFE-SAVING LESSONS: Mahdah Lay and Kler Wah were among the young drivers that learnt about road safety during RYDA last year. The program, aimed at Year 11 students, will return to Mount Gambier this year. Picture: TREVOR JACKSON
