Mount Gambier shopper wins big THE second to last winner has been selected in the Shop Local Win Big competition. Ian McDougall was “pleasantly surprised” when he was selected as this week’s $1000 winner after shopping at Margaret Street Meats in Mount Gambier. The competition is a joint initiative of The South Eastern Times, the Mount Gambier and District Community Bank and local businesses. The fi nal winner in the 15-week initiative will be chosen next week, so only a few days are left to fi ll in an entry form while shopping at one of the participating businesses in Millicent. Mr McDougall said he looked forward to spending the money, but he would put some of it away for a while. “It will come in handy,” he said. “It was certainly a pleasant surprise.” Margaret Street Meats manager Trevor McLean said it was a great initiative which supported businesses across the Limestone Coast. “It puts money back into the community and stimu- lates the local economy,” he said. Mount Gambier and District Community Bendigo Bank branch manager Tracy Koop congratulated Mr McDougall on the win when she handed him the $1000 Bendigo Bank account. “Our bank does fantastic work giving back to its community and this competition is a great way we can do that while encouraging people to shop local,” she said. “It’s exciting to be part of the initiative and we are proud to be a partner in the campaign.” LOCAL WIN: Margaret Street Meats manager Trevor McLean (right) congratulated Ian McDougall on his win of $1000 from Mount Gambier and District Community Bank branch manager Tracy Koop (left). Picture: ALEX McGREGOR Regional tourism growth potential identifi ed TOURISM generated $290m across the Limestone Coast in 2013, according to fi gures collected by the Regional Development Australia (RDA) Limestone Coast. A rolling average of 523,000 visitors per year contributed to the large expenditure, which was calculated by the board’s tourism industry development offi cer Biddie Shearing to provide an informative update on the current status of the tourism industry in the region. With one of the world’s largest professional fi rms, Deloitte, identifying tourism as a top fi ve growth industry once the mining boom begins to fade, strong focus is being put on developing a future plan for the Limestone Coast. According to the statistics, interstate visitors make up 33pc, 59pc travel intrastate, and 8pc come from the international market, while there are 922 tourism businesses and 1084 hotel rooms across the region. “In broad terms the region is receiving more visitors for less nights and the growth area into the future is clearly the international market,” Ms Shearing said. Several areas for action are currently being addressed, with the focus over the next period around growing the number of “saleable” 8 - The South Eastern Times, Thursday, July 10, 2014 tourism experiences for the trade/distribution system, improvement of online content and development of a strategy to tap into the education sector to grow the “visiting friends and relatives” market. The program continues to work on a variety of ongoing projects, including development of the cruise ship market. Despite the recent disappointment with the inability of cruise ship passengers to be transferred to the township of Robe, the steering committee and Robe community are committed to tapping into the potentially lucrative market. Earlier this year, the luxury cruise ship MS Europa docked in Portland, Victoria with reports showing that the infl ux of passengers and crew provided a signifi cant boost for the town’s economy. “I have been extremely impressed by the posi- tive attitude of the Robe community who are now looking ahead at the next cruise ship opportunities in February and March 2015,” Ms Shearing said. A workshop for inbound tourism operators for cruise ships will be held on August 12 in Robe. Anyone interested in participating can contact Ms Shearing via the RDA offi ce. www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au • • L A H S C O 645379
