SPO 35 RT Agnew blitzes field From the Bunker FINE but cold conditions greeted 37 golfers taking out cards in Saturday’s IGA trophy stableford event at the Millicent Golf Club. The field included 10 golfers from the Heywood Golf Club who made the trip over, which assisted with getting a good field for this time of the year. Unfortunately due to the heavy rains we have had of recent times their course is now inundated with water, making it unplayable. It was pleasing to see Chris Agnew return a blitzing round with 42 stableford points to be awarded the overall winner of the day and the IGA trophy. Agnew has recently made a return to the club after having a break from golf with family and work commitments. He previously held a membership for many years and was a grade champion some years ago. Agnew’s score also won the B grade competition from Paul Whitford on 37 points. Andy Varcoe won the A grade and is in rare form at the moment. Varcoe’s 38 points were sufficient to beat Jamie Dunnicliff on a countback, also with 38 points. Jim Hyland won the C grade with a respectable 31 points from Robert Thompson on 30. Only two birdies were recorded for the day and they went to Ben Golding and Heywood junior visitor Jayden McLeod. The nearest to pins on the fifth hole went to McLeod which resulted in his birdie. On the 13th hole Golding was closest, which also resulted in a birdie. Varcoe was nearest on the 17th while nearest for two on the 18th went to Phil Hunter, who claimed the honours for the second week running. Schools out HARRY Coote made the most of the school holidays by playing in Thursday’s stableford event to return a score of 36 points for the overall win, ahead of a red hot Varcoe on 34. The 9-hole win went to Varcoe with 19 points. Only 12 golfers took cards out on this event due to the poor weather, but that did not affect Terry Chant, as he hit a good shot on the fifth to be the winner of the nearest to the pin. Millicent Open PATRICKS of Coonawarra has been announced as major sponsor of the Millicent Open for 2014. The event will now be known as the Patricks of Coonawarra Millicent Open. The event will be contested over 18 holes on August 24 and anyone with a current handicap can play. More news will be released about the event in next week’s edition.
