Millicent Rotarian awarded prestigious medal at changeover dinner 1 NEWS0 Rotary Club service recognition MUSTILLO RAQUEL journo1@setimes.com.au ARIAN John Eldridge has been dedication to the of Millicent with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. The club chose their treasurer for the honour, donating over $1000 to the Rotary Foundation in his name. Mr Eldridge was surprised to see two of his three children at the Millicent District and Community Club during the group’s changeover dinner on July 3. “It was a bit of a surprise and a real honour because Rotary is a really great club,” he said. “The fellowship and activities Rotary provides for the community is something I enjoy being a part of. “You don’t do things because you want to be rewarded, you do them because it’s the good thing to do.” Interested in sport and humanitarian ventures, the second generation Rotarian commits his time to a number of committees, including the Millicent North primary and high schools governing councils, Millicent Gymnastics Club, Blue Lake Y Swim Club and the Millicent Work Options Centre. The former hockey player maintained the grounds at the Fred Bolton Oval during the season and when injuries forced him into early retirement, Mr Eldridge umpired and coached teams at the Millicent Hockey Club. He began his working career with ForestrySA before gaining employ- that has been going on for 10 years. “The KCA community care was a fairly large and diverse project and the social club was a really big and rewarding activity for employees and their families.” Mr Eldridge was inducted into the Millicent Rotary club in 2003 and served as president in 2008/09, following in the footsteps of his father Doug, who was a past president of the club. Through his involvement with Rotary, Mr Eldridge has focused his efforts on the Rotary Photographic Art Show and is a regular participant at the club’s working bees. Mr Eldridge attributes his years of community involvement to a faith-based upbringing. “One day I was in a supermarket in Adelaide and there was a woman that didn’t have enough money in her purse to buy a packet of crumpets,” he said. “I put the crumpets through the scanner and gave them to her and my biggest regret was not buying $50 worth of groceries. “If someone needs a bit of help, I’ll help them because it is the way I was brought up.” Despite taking a backseat to many RECOGNITION: Dedicated community member John Eldridge was recently awarded the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award at the Rotary Club of Millicent Changeover Dinner. ment at Apcel (now Kimberly-Clark Australia), where he was employed as a management accountant for 35 years. “We did a lot of great things at KCA, we got management to donate $100,000 worth of computers to the schools and we started up the free toilet paper scheme with the Cancer Council’s accommodation centre, Greenhill Lodge,” he said. “Someone told me they went through a lot of toilet paper, so we organised for 2000 rolls to be sent up to Adelaide and it’s something projects, the 2009 recipient of the Wattle Range Council Australia Day Award said he enjoyed his current voluntary efforts at the men’s shed and Canunda Friends of the Parks. “Helping people who need help is just something you do without expecting anything in return,” he said. “It’s something that gives me a warm feeling and I always have and I always will.” Include your business on our Trades & Services page Ph: (08) 8733 3755 or E: ads@setimes.com.au Only $22 per week single size or $44 per week double size Carpet Dry Cleaning South East ~ GIL PURDIE ~ & Upholstery Services Locally Owned. 10 Years Experience.
