4 NEWS Low income tax help available VOLUNTEERS from 80 community centres across South Australia provide support to people having diffi culty completing their tax returns. “Tax Help is a free and confi - dential service provided by local ATO-trained and accredited volunteers,” assistant commissioner Karen Anstis said. “Last year, over 55,000 people needing help with their tax return received assistance from our volunteers.” Anyone who earns around $50,000 or less per year and has straightforward tax affairs is able to use the service. Many of the Tax Help centres also cater for people from nonEnglish speaking backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, students, seniors and people with a disability. The free service is available by appointment until the end of October. For more information go to ato. gov.au/taxhelp or contact 132 861. Phara-go or stay? Millicent sculpture location debate OPINIONS are divided about the sculpture of a pharaoh which has stood in the grounds of Millicent High School since the 1970s. It was carved out of limestone as a student project and later painted blue and gold. A recent suggestion on the The South Eastern Times Facebook page that the Pharaoh be moved to the centre of the George Street roundabout sparked a strong response. Some serious and tongue-in-cheek views were among the 70 comments posted. A NEW art piece could be commissioned from Millicent sculptor Ant Martin such as a large red gum kangaroo and an emu or two. That would be interesting and very apt around the Wattle Range council area. Wattle Range councillor signals re-election hope MILLICENT resident Barry Stoddart is seeking reelection to Wattle Range Council. He has become the fi rst elected member of the council to reveal his intentions for the next 2014-18 council. Cr Stoddart is a retired stock agency employee and was fi rst elected to Corcoran Ward in 2010. With nominations opening in just over a month, other councillors are yet to make up their minds. Cr Sharon Cox was elected to Corcoran Ward in 2006, but said she had to weigh up her new employment responsibilities. “I am now working in the Malseeds real estate offi ce in Millicent,” Cr Cox said. Cr John Drew joined council in 2012 follow- ing the resignation of Darren O’Halloran on Corcoran Ward. “I have enjoyed the experience of being on council,” Cr Drew said. “I am thinking positively about it.” Millicent resident Peter Dunnicliff was fi rst elected to Sorby Adams Ward in 2006 and switched to Corcoran four years later. Cr Dunnicliff takes over the ownership of a Beachport business on August 1. He has signalled he would like to continue to be involved in local government. Cr Ben Treloar, of Kintore ward, is another who is giving serious consideration to standing again, but has not yet made a fi nal decision. Mayor Peter Gandolfi and the majority of other councillors have been approached on the election issue in recent weeks and have stated they are either still undecided or unwilling to comment at this stage. www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au Why put anything at the roundabout? It currently serves its purpose and is free of blind spots, obstructions and money wasting statues for bogans to vandalise. JAY PEEK It would be a great celebration of our Egyptian heritage. BRAD TILLEY The pharaoh is ugly and an eyesore and it would certainly It should be left at the high school. KELLY JOHNSTON distract drivers coming onto the roundabout. KARYL BURNETT I really don’t think pharaohs have much in common with Millicent. KERRYL STILES Putting it on the George Street roundabout is a ridiculous idea. I suggest it be relocated to the dump at the fi rst opportunity. DUANE FERGUSON Leave it where it is, but paint it to look more like its original limestone colour. CHRIS HOLLINGSWORTH What about the giant dunny rolls idea in the George Street roundabout to signify our links to Kleenex toilet paper made at the KCA Millicent Mill? CHRIS GORDON It wouldn’t last long in the roundabout before it’s vandalised or smashed into by a car. Stick it in the local playground and let the little kids play on it.
