20 MID SOUTH EAST NETBALL Eagles smash Mozzies FINALS draw closer as Round 16 of the Mid South East A grade netball competition came to an end. The round saw Hatherleigh comfortably defeat Mount Burr, Kalangadoo maintain number one spot, beating Port MacDonnell, Glencoe has it over Kongorong and Robe gets the upper hand on Tantanoola. Hatherleigh 73 d Mount Burr 37 HATHERLEIGH started strong leaving Mount Burr behind. The Eagles capitalised on every opportunity and forcing Mount Burr to make errors. Mid-court players Erin HARD WORKING: Emily Russell of Mount Burr worked hard to shut down Hatherleigh’s strong attack line on Saturday. Watson and Demi Smith fed to goalies Keston Green and Kelsey Bromley with pinpoint accuracy. The first quarter was all the Eagles as they capitalised on any mistake made by Mount Burr. Hatherleigh’s defensive pres- sure lifted in the second term and Mount Burr struggled to convert possession into goals. When the ball made it into the circle Mount Burr goalies Hayley Agnew and Ebony Clark struggled to find the basket. Missed opportunities were snapped up by Hatherleigh defenders Kaitlin Smith and Georgina Brooks. The centre court tussle between Watson and Laura Schultz was entertaining with both playing tight netball. Determinat ion never wavered from the Mozzies defender Heidi Clark. However, it wasn’t enough to stop the Hatherleigh attack line. LOOKING FOR OPTIONS: Ebony McDiarmid of Glencoe looks for another option after she rebounded Kongorong’s missed shot. The Mozzies continued to contest every ball. However, Hatherleigh’s relentless pressure caused many turnovers. Mount Burr’s Clark and Agnew started to sink the long shot and Hatherleigh made a number of changes at the final break with Kaitlin Smith having a run at centre, Pulmer moving to goal defence and Watson to wing defence. The Mozzies long shots continued to drop and they had chances to intercept as Hatherleigh’s attack line was becoming predictable. Hatherleigh settled in the last few minutes increasing its lead and showing dominance, running out winners by 36. Kalangadoo 70 d Port MacDonnell 43 KALANGADOO continues its dominance with a 27 goal victory over Port MacDonnell on the weekend. Right from the start the Magpies took control of the game. Junior, Maddy Murdoch for the Demons had her first run in goals in the A grade side and supported her experienced shooter Toni-Lee Gilmore. FEEDING WELL: Hatherleigh’s Erin Watson looks up court for an option. Watson fed into fellow goalies with ease on the weekend when the Eagles clashed with Mount Burr. together they added 17 points to the scoreboard. Individual battles over the court were impressive, particularly through the midcourt with Marie Lewis for the Demons and Jayde Peacock for the Magpies. Neither player was willing to give an inch and they both played a key role in feeding the ball into their goalies. In the final term, the Demons were able to hold the Magpies to their lowest score for the game. But, it was not enough and Kalangadoo ran the game out, winning 70 to 43. Glencoe 63 d Kongorong 36 KONGORONG failed to keep up with Glencoe, going down by 27 goals. Kongorong’s defence in Tiia Pelkonen and Sarah Lucas read the ball well and put pressure on the Murphies goalies, creating many missed goals. The Hawks Kaylah Earl and Courtney Pink were combining well to get the ball into attack. Glencoe’s Sarah and Ashlea Edwards fed well into their goalies, which saw Laura Edwards shoot 14 goals from 15 attempts. The Murphies’ goalies Sarah Lawler and Laura Edwards were working well together finishing off their teams efforts. However, Kongorong’s tall goal shooter Tabatha Sanderson kept up the pace, receiving clean passes from her fellow teammates, despite her tall opponent Ebony McDiarmid. Quality netball through defensive pressure proved that Kongorong is capable of a win. Ellie Waters and Sam Allen drove and reoffered down the court was encouraging their team. Kongorong pushed Glencoe all game but in the end Glencoe was better on the day. Robe 64 d Tantanoola 49 ACCURATE: Melissa Russell along with her goalie teammate Caroline Davey added many goals to the scoreboard on the weekend. However, with experience and height on the Magpies side, they managed to out-score Port MacDonnell by 11 goals in the first quarter. The combination of Melissa Russell and Caroline Davey was great to watch and ROBE sent a message to Tantanoola when it scored the first four goals of the match. Strong defensive pressure from Chloe Dawson at goal defence made in difficult for the Tigers goalies to find the post. At the other end Kate Bromley and Simone Little had their hands full, with the height of Keeley Mason and strength of Felicity Carter. Robe held a two goal margin at the first break and continued to build on the lead as the game transpired. Tantanoola continued to work hard, with Casey Arney and Casey Walker providing plenty of drive in the mid-court. Youngster Alex Lucas worked hard at wing defence, shutting down the Roosters drive onto the circle. However, the Tigers turnover rate allowed Robe to score freely. Hannah Perkins was tireless at centre, feeding the ball into the goalies with great patience. At the final whistle Robe won by 15 goals. www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au 653389
