Mid South East netball Tuesday Edition THE SOUTH EASTERN TIMES Demons burst Pies bubble H Mid South Mid South d South East netball Tuesday Edition TH South East netball Tuesday Edition THE SOUTH EASTERN TIMES Demons burst Pies bubble H J.L. J.L. “FRED” fred@setimes.com.au THE battle for the top four in the Mid South East Football League intensifi ed on Saturday with Port MacDonnell and Tantanoola consolidating their positions. However, reigning premier, Hatherleigh looks in danger of missing the fi nals after losing for the second consecutive week and dropping to fi fth. With two rounds to play in the home-and-away season, every position in the top fi ve could still change. Mount Burr 16.14 (110) d Hatherleigh 9.13 (67) THE Mozzies are back in the groove while the Eagles have been grounded after a one-sided contest at the big home ground of the reigning premier. The home side looked stronger with the return of skipper Brett Sneath to the helm after a lengthy lay-off with a troublesome knee injury. On the other hand, the pre- match speculation about the return to the Mozzies of 2012 joint Mail Medallist Dylan Gamble proved to be groundless. As Gamble played with SANFL zone club, Glenelg reserves team on Saturday and after the July 31 cut-off date, he cannot resume with his home club in 2014. The visitors began well by booting 3.4 while conceding just two behinds. The honours were shared in the second term and then the Mozzies opened up a match-winning lead in the third quarter. An eight goal to three third term gave Mount Burr a hefty lead of 48 points at the fi nal change. When the fi nal siren sounded, the Mozzies held a 43 point lead and it was a satisfying way for visiting skipper Clint Gallio to mark his 100th game. Hatherleigh just can’t find a dominating forward and none of their 21 players used in this match could boot more than two goals. At the other end of the oval, the Mozzies had the two targets of Chris Murray and Jack Gregory who fi nished with four goals apiece. One of the off-fi eld sidelights of the afternoon was the Ladies Day social occasion which was well supported by the “fairer sex” of both clubs. As a result, the coffers of the Alzheimer’s Australia Foundation will be boosted by $1000. In Round 17, Hatherleigh is away to Glencoe while Mount Burr is at home to Port MacDonnell. Port MacDonnell 14.10 (94) d Kalangadoo (78) THE Magpie bubble was well and truly busted by the Demons at the Bay and the result has added extra interest to the premiership race. The visitors were humbled in the fi rst quarter as they failed to get on the scoreboard while conceding 4.3. Kalangadoo made slight inroads 24 - The South Eastern Times, Tuesday, August 5, 2014 on this defi cit in the remaining three terms but was still 16 points in arrears at the end of the game. In a return to form, the seasiders STINGING MOZZIE: Star Mount Burr onballer, Tom Renzi. FINALS BOUND: Mount Burr’s Nathan Muhovics and his Mozzie teammates are on target for another MSEFL premiership. showed that they are still a force in the competition and had not fl uked their three appearances in the past four grand fi nals. It was a game of mixed fortunes for Port MacDonnell’s injured players. Star recruit Josh Ransom suffered a reoccurrence of a hamstring injury which he had sustained at Hatherleigh on July 19. On the other hand, Brad Stephens was back to his best form in the pivot and was named best for his side. He has missed almost two months of footy in 2014 on account of a broken thumb against Tantanoola on April 12. A late season bye will be welcomed by the Magpies and this will allow players, young and old, to have a fortnight’s break before hosting the Mount Burr Mozzies on August 16. Meanwhile, the Demons play the Mozzies on Saturday. Tantanoola 20.15 (135) d Robe 8.10 (58) THE battle of the two red-andwhite teams at Tigerland went the Port MacDonnell throws premiership race wide open way predicted by the pundits with a big 77 point win to the home side. Despite the absence of utility player Matt Pilmore due to an injury sustained in the Round 15 match at Glencoe, the Tigers were too strong for a disappointing Rooster line-up. The seasiders kept up to their hosts for the fi rst half and the home team dominated thereafter. By the last change, it was obvi- ous that Tantanoola was on its way to a sizeable victory. By adding seven goals in the fi nal term and conceding just one, Tantanoola gained the valuable percentage boost it was seeking. With Pilmore out of the line-up, Robbie Versace and Glen Gascoyne were the main focal points in attack. Versace’s seven goals was his best one-day effort in 2014 and took his season’s tally to 35. One of the surprising inclusions for the victors was Justin Rehn. The former Millicent and Hatherleigh player made his fi rst A grade appearance for 2014. The winning team had everything to play for while the losers only had pride as the motivation. Regular Robe A graders Jaryd Dawson and Zac Deane played two senior games on Saturday. Looking to Round 17, Tantanoola plays its last scheduled game of the minor round with a trip to Nangwarry. It is possible for the Saints to avoid consecutive wooden spoons and so the visitors will have to be on their guard. The incentive for the Tigers is that another win will guarantee them a third consecutive first semi-fi nal. Robe achieved a rare 2014 victory at Kongorong’s expense on May 31 and will be looking to repeat this feat on Saturday. Glencoe 21.17 (143) d Kongorong 5.7 (37) ONLY’pride was at stake when the Hawks hosted the Murphies with the “main event” being the 500th senior game for Kongorong of David “Gilbo” Gilbert. When the result of this match is long forgotten, the Mid SE fraternity will long remember the day that “Gilbo’ achieved a personal milestone which has few equals in football competitions anywhere. “Gilbo” walked on to the oval via a guard of honour manned by players and offi cials. The two teams made “Gilbo” earn his weekly pay (a cool drink at half-time) as he waved the fl ags on 50 occasions in all. It was the Murphies that featured most in the scoring department with 38 shots to 12. After a fade-out to Tantanoola in Round 15, Glencoe’s forwards made amends somewhat with a brilliant opening term on Saturday. Continued page 23 www.thesoutheasterntimes.com.au PAGE 20
